Whitfield Mauzy Obituary

Whit Y. Mauzy, Jr., aged 99, died on November 2, 2025. He was born on July 21, 1926, in Richmond, Virginia. He lived most of his life in Tulsa, Ok. Whit was an Eagle Scout. He attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, graduating in 1948. After graduating from MIT, he worked as a project manager in Venezuela's oil fields. He and his first wife, Gail Macomber Deaver, lived there for eight years. Whit and Gail were some of the original adventurers to drive their jeep on the shore of Lake Maracaibo, while the other water-skied. They climbed Pico Bolivar. After Venezuela, they moved to Windham, NY, in the Catskills, where he engineered the entire original lift structures for Cave Mountain (now Ski Windham). After his divorce, he returned to Tulsa, OK. He worked in Oklahoma and the surrounding states as a surveyor for many of the large developments.

Whit loved being outdoors, especially camping. He loved animals, particularly dogs. And his favorite food was ice cream, all flavors except pickle ice cream. Another lifelong love was dancing. He and Dottie Evans, his second wife, were avid swing dancers, winning many competitions. Whit loved dogs and ice cream. In his lifetime of 99 years and 4 months, he witnessed the following milestones: the first electronic television, the first electronic digital computer, the first transatlantic flight, the stock market crash, the Great Depression, World War II, the atomic bomb, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Civil Rights Movement, and the beginning/ending of the Cold War, human space travel, four minute mile, 100 point game, global pandemic. Cubs and Red Sox break their curse. Watched the Berlin Wall go up and then back down again. Whit was involved in the civil rights movement and went door-to-door in black neighborhoods in Tulsa, encouraging residents to register to vote. He was a lifelong card-carrying Democrat.

Whit was always an athlete. He was the Oklahoma high school state champion in wrestling. He rode crew at MIT. He ran short road races and marathons. He did triathlons and was a member of the US triathlon team in his 60s. He qualified for the world championships.

Whit spent his last years basking in the glory of a four-generation home in Park City, UT. His last hours were spent with his family, either in person or on the phone, singing his heart out. He died peacefully with his daughter Gracee holding his chest and granddaughter Jeanee holding his hand. He was survived by daughters Elly M. Keane and Grace E Mauzy; sister Marcia M Grantham; grandchildren Janet Marley-Mauzy, Christopher Keane, Jamie MoCrazy, Jeanee Crane-Mauzy, Jilly Crane-Mauzy; great-grandchildren Tikaani Blaze Marley and Abigaya Siblet Marley; stepchildren Joe Evans, Jennifer Evans, Jeff Evans; and stepgrandchildren Collin Evans, Kenzie Evans, Kellen Gardnier, Courtney Evans, and Cameron Evans. He was preceded in death by his sister, Eleanor M. Anderson. The family and a few friends from Utah had a small gathering for an ice cream social in his honor on Wednesday, November 5. His celebration of life will be in early May at the Boston Avenue Methodist Church in Tulsa, Ok. Please contact Gracee for details.

I knew the name Whit Mauzy years before I met Jeff. At TCC in the Land Survey classes The name Whit Mauzy was shared regularly, like any other important information that we learned about conducting a proper survey. He was known for having integrity and accuracy. When Jeff borough me home to meet his family I was so glad to get to meet Whit and Dottie . I spent many days hanging out with Whit and listening to his stories while we ate ice cream. I am honored to have known him. He will be missed by me and my children.

I remember many Christmases and thanksgiving's that Dottie and Whit had invited me to. They both were like family to me and accepted me when I moved to Oklahoma from Montana. He will be missed.
