Bruce was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, and lived abroad as a child with his mother, Josephine, and father, Air Force Bird Col. Raymond Louis Troyer. He even spent a few years in Japan as a small boy. After graduating Perris High School in Riverside County, California, he joined the Navy, where he learned his lifelong occupation as an air traffic controller.
He met Dolores Gallegos in 1959 and the couple married in 1960. They welcomed their first child, Raymond Louis Troyer II, on Sept. 19, 1961, and their second child, Amy Beth Troyer, on March 12, 1963. The children were born in Las Vegas, Nev., where Mr. Troyer began his career. The FAA took the Troyers all over Southern California, and they spent five years in Sacramento, Calif.
In September 1980, Bruce and Dolores lost their only son, Ray, in a tragic car accident.
During the air traffic controller strike of the early 1980s, Mr. Troyer was the chief of the Oxnard Tower. Upon President Ronald Reagan's order to fire all striking air traffic controllers, Mr. Troyer was moved to the LAX radar room where he was the chief manager for just over 10 years. "My Dad knew everyone," his daughter recalls. "He was the funniest person I ever knew, a real prankster. He was larger than life, and he filled a room. I thought he was a movie star when I was a little girl — I had the handsomest Dad in the world. The Navy used his picture on an aircraft carrier as their advertisement for recruits. He had a huge heart. He was always secretly helping someone, and there were many families he looked after. He was a great guy, a man's man, always on a new motorcycle or showing off a new car. He had an incredible work ethic. He watched over millions of lives on his job; he was a brilliant multitasker."
"He loved music. He was a gifted athlete — one of those guys that did everything well. He was a runner. He ran three miles a day right up to the time he was hospitalized." After four years of confinement, he finally succumbed to a mysterious degenerative neurological disease on Sunday morning, Nov. 30, 2008.
He is survived by the mother of his son and daughter, Dolores Troyer; his daughter, Amy Troyer Williams , her husband Joseph Williams and three beloved granddaughters, Sarah, Hannah and Emma-Ray.
He will be missed. He is at peace with his heavenly father and reunited with his beloved son, Ray.
A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 13, 2008, at Griffin Family Funeral Chapel in Camarillo, 1075 Daily Drive; phone 805-482-1166. Interment will be held privately in Sacramento.
The family would like to thank Professional Fiduciary/Conservator Sarah Jane Hardcastel for her compassionate overseeing of Bruce's care. "We thank God for her strength and guidance."

I'll always be thankful for Bruce's efforts in starting my commercial aviation career. Bruce was well connected in the business and those connections helped me transition from military aviation to my dream job of flying for a major airline.
Thanks Bruce, you won't be forgotten. Someday I hope to return the favor by helping someone else realize a lifetime dream.

Bruce was one of our customers. He always had a great story to tell, was always interested in everything and everyone, and always brought his dog with him. We just loved him! When he stopped coming in, we didn't know what had happened. Did we make him upset? No, he was just not able to come by any longer. Oh, dear Bruce, thank-you for all the special visits, and thank-you for being such a loyal customer. Not many like you around here anymore. God Bless your family and help them through this holiday. Rest in Peace.

Bruce was one of my Dad's best friends-
Bruce and my Dad, John Christensen, both loved to try out new cars, motorcycles and bicycles. Both up for a challenge and to find the new best buy.
Bruce sold me one of his many Toyota trucks; for a great buy. Of course I think it was his best one! I still have the white Toyota Tundra he sold me in 2004. Thanks again Buddy Bruce!
It was fun sitting in jury duty with you also. Good times talking about you and my Dad's wild times. Such a kidder- both you and my Dad. We both got called into court- and we both got out! ;-)
I'm sure you and my Dad are having a party with old Uncle Tom now. Peace be with you all.

Hi Dad,
I knew this would be hard, I never could have imagined how different this world would feel without you here. You were my great protector, my hero. I know you would tell me to get up and walk or run or take my horse up into the hills and let him run. Will you ask God to help us through this Christmas without you. You were such a kid you could never wait till Christmas morning to open presents, we always took those car ride's on Christmas eve so your friends at the Tower could give Santa special clearance to make his delivery to our house early, the perks of being a Air Traffic Controllers kid! I love you so much, me and your Granddaughters miss you so much, you know that. We will all be together again some day, tell Ray I love him.
Tell Jesus Happy Birthday, I love you Dad.
Your little girl,
Amy (Sis)

I worked for and with Bruce for many years at Oxnard Tower. He was a generous man who always had a ready smile and a joke. He showed so much compassion when my daughter was diagnosed with cancer and supported me in many ways throughout the years. He missed his son terribly and is finally joined with him. Safe passage Bruce, you will be missed. With much love, Norine and Jennifer Harwood

Rusty, as we knew him was very loved by the Christensen's. The over the hill gang in San Felipe road long and hard with many stories to tell. I hope they have Snapple in Heaven and you are still trying to keep our boys in line. I love you and you will be in our hearts always.

My Dad was blessed to have such loving friends, he is smiling and wanting us to all be at peace with his passing. You know he asked for a meeting with the "man in charge" as soon as he arrived in heaven and asked God for us all to be alright with this, then him and my brother Ray set off to break the speed limits in heaven! I find great peace in the the fact that he and Ray are finally together forever. I can hear them laughing in my heart.
God Bless,

Bruce was always such a dear friend to my husband, John, and I. We go way back to high scool days and always kept in touch thru the years. John and Bruce took many trips together and enjoyed each other company very much. One thing they liked to do is go Christmas shopping on Christmas Eve. I think they enjoyed the crowds. They were best buddies. Bruce will be missed My heart aches for your loss. You are in my prayers Love, Arlene Christensen

I met Bruce in 1950 at Perris High School. He was a sophomore and I was a senior. We weren't close in those days but we did play football on the same team. I joked in later years that we used him for a tackle dummy.
We later worked together as Air Traffic Controllers for the FAA. After his transfer from Las Vegas to Los Angeles our friendship blossomed. I don't think a week went by that we didn't communicate. This continued even when we were at different work facilities.
He had an incessant desire to be the best at anything he did. This and his sense of humor ensured that he was liked by all who knew him.
Bruce was my friend and I shall miss him dearly.

I worked with Bruce for many years . I first met him when I became his rep in the Regional OIffice and he was Chief of Sacremento Tower. He was a fine person and liked by everyone. I felt bad for him these last years when he was ill as did all his friends. He always had a smile for everyone. He is missed....

My dad, (Doc) always called him, "My buddy, Bruce." So that is what we nicknamed him in our family and whenever we would talk about him, that's how we would refer to him, "My buddy, Bruce."
I will always remember his generous ways and humorous personality. It makes me smile thinking of him and my dad in heaven having a good time laughing and maybe even takin' a motorcycle ride, haha.
We are thinking of you and praying for you at this time of loss.
Love, Shari Christensen Herbruck

In My Pocket
I have memories in my pocket.
They rattle among the change.
My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.
They are stored in bits and pieces, parts of a beautiful whole
They give me comfort when I think I am alone.
Yes, I have memories in my pocket, like so much other stuff I keep there.
But of all the treasures I have, it’s the memories of you that are the most precious.
