Ernest Charles Obituary

PIKEVILLE, KY. Ernest James Charles of Pikeville, Ky., formerly of Tuscaloosa, died Friday, March 26, 2010, at Pikeville Medical Center.

He was born September 28, 1927, in Pike County, Ky. the fourth child of ten, to the late James Grayson and Octavia Reynolds Charles.

He was retired from the U.S. Air Force with more than 24 years of service and a retiree of the Florida Department of Corrections. He was a POW of the Korean Conflict for 3 years, 1 month and 27 days.

He is preceded in death by his wife of more than 50 years, Essie Lea Caines Charles; brothers, Curt Charles, Dewey Charles, and Clyde Charles; and sisters, Olive Bevins, Imal Brown, and Janet Charles.

He is survived by his wife, Emma Lou Thompson Charles of Pikeville, Ky.; daughter, Debby (Jimmy) Porter of Tuscaloosa; son, Stephen Charles of North Carolina; a brother, Roy (Doris) Charles of Vilonia, Ark.; two sisters, Violet Canada of Port Orange, Fla. and Norma Gartin of Pikeville, Ky.; three grandchildren, Alix (Brian) Hatter of Brookwood, Angel (Robbie) Norris of Moundville, and Chris Porter of Tuscaloosa; two great-grandchildren, Dallin and Elise Hatter; and a host of many loving nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held in Pikeville, Monday March 29, 2010, at J.W. Call Funeral Home.

Entombment will be held Wednesday March 31, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. at Memory Hill Gardens in Tuscaloosa with President Blake Archibald, Counselor in the Bessemer Stake Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints presiding.
