Jane McWhorter Obituary

FAYETTE Jane McWhorter passed away February 26, 2013, with family by her side.

Jane McWhorter was born November 14, 1935, in Nashville, Tenn. She lived in Fayette, Alabama for the past 39 years, where her husband Don served as minister for the Fayette Church of Christ and Jane taught first grade. She was Alabama's Merit Mother of the Year in 1994. Jane was a bestselling author of nine books and was a popular speaker at conferences and ladies' events across the U.S.

Jane was known and loved by others, however, not for her achievements, but for the love she showed to them. Jane loved, accepted, and saw the good in each person exactly the way they were. She was regularly seen taking balloons and birthday presents to all the residents at the nursing home, bringing food to the sick and those grieving, teaching adults who had never learned to read, visiting and taking food to those in prison, remembering hundreds of people each year with a handwritten note and gift on their birthday and anniversary.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Richard Shannon and Elma Delk Shannon, and by her husband, Don, to whom she was married for 52 years.

She is survived by her two children, daughter Kathy Kendall (Tony), and son Greg McWhorter (Shannon); and her six grandchildren, Shannon and Emily Kendall and Jack, Sam, Kate, and Claire McWhorter.

Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Friday, March 1, 2013, at the Fayette Church of Christ. Visitation will be held tonight from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Nelson Funeral Home in Fayette and also immediately following the funeral service at Fayette Church of Christ. Nelson Funeral Home of Fayette is directing.

Although I never met Sister McWhorter, through her books I could sense what a wonderful Christian woman she was. I had hoped that one day I would get to hear her speak at a ladies day. I know she will be sadly missed here on this earth, but praise God she has gone home to her reward.

Through her books, she helped me see me, my life & my Savior in ways that have & continue to help me walk in His way. I hope to continue to follow her example as she followed Christ.

Mr. McWhorter was my first grade teacher. Back then I was a shy, cry baby, she protected and took care of me. I loved her to pieces!

Jane was such a good example for me of a christian woman and I am so glad I got to meet her. She was like another grandmother to me. We wrote back in forth all the time and we had the privilege to visit her just a couple weeks ago! I can't wait to see her in heaven someday.

Jane exemplified the role of wife, mother, grandmother, and neighbor. She epitomized the meaning of "sister in Christ." Her life touched men and women of many nations. She gave all who knew her a new perspective on day-to-day living. Although Jane is gone, she remains with us. I thank God for her insistence on following Christ and showing Him to all who knew her.

May God bless you during this time in your life. Mrs. McWhorter was a wonderful lady. My late mother was on her mailing list and mom always enjoyed the cards that she sent. May she rest in peace in the arms of GOD.

Only eternity will show how many people have come to the Lord, or stayed in the race, because of Jane's love, teaching, and influence. Many of us are better wives, mothers, and teachers because Jane shared herself with us so willingly. Our prayers are with her family.

Illness prevents our presence at her service, but our hearts will be with the family
