I had the privilege of working with Arlen at the us department of energy at the end of the. Bush administration. Arlen was a principal deputy assistant secretary in the then office of international affairs and policy. I was his intelligence briefer, meeting daily on world energy security threats. Over time we became friends and he regaled me with his experiences raising his large family overseas while a peace corps official. After he left DOE, we continued to meet lunch on his trips back to dc, international consulting and while managing Minnesota international health volunteers. My favorite memory was meeting him with my spouse for a very special tour of the Capitol which Arlen clearly loved. I admired and respected this exemplary empathetic humanist man of integrity who loved America, his family and minnesota

I had the good fortune to work for Arlen when he was Secretary of State and again in Washington after he was elected to Congress. He was the model of a statesman and was always eager to find common ground on issues facing Minnesota and the nation. One of my fondest memories of him was after TIME magazine ran a story of Members of Congress and listed who they thought was the most best dressed, the wealthiest, the most influential, etc. One of the categories was the "nicest". Arlen won that mention from TIME. When he showed me the article, he said he felt like he won the most important category. He was a man of great contributions but he never lost sight of what we could all accomplish together if we make sure we make space for everyone to contribute together.
