Kim-
I never knew you but the couple times I talked to Carl I could tell he really loved you. I will always hold the piece of him that I got to share in my heart for as long as I live. I know you will too. I am so very sorry for you and the whole family. I am sure you will miss him terribly. He was a wonderful person. Even though I haven't seen or talked to Carl for years now, I still feel very sad for him and all of you. I'm just glad he found the love you two shared. I think of him every year on his birthday still. Happy birthday Carl. Cheryl

Whenever I returned to Minnesota the very first place I wanted to go was the Gasthaus. The familiar smells and flavors, warm atmosphere, and always a smile and laughter from my friend Carl. I will miss you my friend and when I think of you I will always see your smile and hear your giggle in my heart.

Kim, I can't tell you of our shock when we read about Carly. Our thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family. Carly and his father ran a wonderful restaurant and brought true German traditions to the St. Croix Valley. They both will be greatly missed.

We have only known Carl for a few years, but he has touched our hearts. We often talked about snowmobiling in Jackson Hole and how the Gasthaus ski teams were doing. We enjoyed spending time with him at Fortune Bay Casino during the ski finals last March. Carl won big at the slots! But more importantly, we will miss his quiet sense of humor and his graciousness.
We will miss you Carl.

We were so shocked to hear of Carly's passing. He was always there to share a smile and a laugh and we both thought the world of him. There are very few people in this world that you can say you never heard a negative word out of his mouth and Carly was one of them. He will be greatly missed by all but his spirit will stay alive in our sharing stories of him. Our prayers and thoughts are with you Kim and your family. Your entire family at the Gasthaus is behind you as well.

Carly,
Wow! Thank you for all that you have done for me and my children!
You never judged me or made me feel less of a person for the mistakes that I have made. I will always have a great love and respect for you. The girls hold you and all their uncles on a wonderful pedistal called fatherhood. You were their seroget father that showed how to accept people and love life and the outdoors. You and Kim have always been down to earth and given the girls more love and affection than any amount of money could buy. Thank you for being Carly!
Love you always

My Dearest Kim: What a wonderful photo you chose for Carl's obituary notice in the Pioneer Press. It truly defines his engaging personality----laid back. Unselflishly, Carl and you Kim, made me a popular man in the Deutsche music business throughout the Twin City Metro area. For that I am most grateful. I can never thank you sufficiently enough.
Your everloving friend......Artie

I worked for Carl at the Gasthaus for almost 9 years now. Of those years, not only has he been a boss, but he has also been a mentor, and a great friend. He was always a man who was willing to go the extra mile and make things perfect for everybody.
His grinny smile and long laughs will never be forgotten. Carl knew hundreds of people and they all respected him highly. He kept the Gasthaus tradition alive from his father for not only the regular customers and dedicated employees, but also the Schoene family.
The night before his sudden tragic death, we were having our Gasthaus employee party. He was in good spirits, just like I have always known him. Its very sad that the hug I gave hime before he left, was the last time I would ever see him.
Carl will be deeply missed by everyone. The author Morrie Schwartz once said "Death ends a life, not a relationship." My relationship with Carl will never end. I will always remember the things he did and the affect Carl had on my life.

Anne and I were deeply saddened and shocked to hear of Carl's death. He was a friend for life and he will be greatly missed. The Gasthaus was started by Carl's father and is a treasure which continued to shine and prosper with Carl and Kim. May God comfort Kim and all the friends who loved Carl dearly.
