David HOHMAN Obituary

When David (Dave) William Hohman, 69, died of cancer at his home in Pepin, WI on August 26, 2021, his perpetual smile faded, leaving only the sparkle of his love for life. Born at high noon January 6, 1952 in St. Paul, Minnesota to Virginia Evelyn (Lungstrom) and Robert John Hohman (Bensen), he was raised in the Linden Hills neighborhood of Minneapolis. He attended Lake Harriet Elementary until fifth grade when "he was hustled from its honey hued hallways to the button-down experience of Breck School". He majored in psychology at the University of Minnesota and got an MBA at St. Thomas but always wished he'd become a scientist, "to focus on a task with a team". Instead, he followed the path of his book loving family and took a job as a salesman with Warner Books. He moved from sales into marketing at Motorbooks International, an automotive book publisher, created specialty books at Linden Hills Press and then became a partner and marketing director at Voyager Press until it was sold in 2005. He returned to Motorbooks until 2012 when he purchased Iconographix, a publisher known for specialty books for enthusiasts of all kinds. It was a perfect fit as he was interested in everything, being a lifelong learner and traveler.  On August 29, 1981, he married Joann Louise (Jodi, Coco) Lind, another lighthearted, creative spirit who embraced life with a sense of humor and optimism. He and Jodi worked together for twenty-five years transforming their 1880s farmstead in Pepin, Wisconsin into a whimsical gathering place for friends and family, doing nearly all of the work themselves, using mostly repurposed elements and making memories for all who visited there. Dave's barbecues in the "shack" were legendary among family and friends. They raised their son Jesse in St. Paul where Dave shared his craftsman skills, love of projects and problem solving with Jesse. He was devoted to him and later to his grandgirls Sophia and Camille, encouraging their common enthusiasm for books and finding joy in everything. His childhood friends and work colleagues remained his trusted, lifelong friends with whom he shared his love of golf (he organized an annual two-day Southern Swing featuring golf, poker, and a "que"), fishing (four-time winner of the Basshole award!), and hockey which he continued to play into his 60s. His clever quips will be remembered by all.  He leaves behind his wife Joann; son, Jesse (Brianna); granddaughters Sophia and Camille Hohman; brother Jeff Hohman (Gracie); nephews Neal Hohman (Sarah), Colin Hohman (Erika), Jay Lind, Chris Lind (Carol), Christian Lind (Janko); and niece Brindi Melton; brother-in-law Richard Lind (Mali); sister-in-law Carla Lind and a cadre of dear, devoted friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Virginia Hohman, his mother-in-law Christine Lind and his brother-in-law and dear friend John Lind. The family wishes to thank the dozens of friends, family members and medical workers who helped make his final months comfortable, enjoyable, and peaceful. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date.  Memorials can be sent to the environmental group LakePepinLegacyAlliance.org or mailed to Lake Pepin Legacy Alliance, P.O. Box 392, Red Wing, MN 55066.

Jeff, it is with a heavy heart I read the obit regarding the loss of your brother, who like you, was a cherished and skilled hockey player. He was a great, great guy and a wonderful conversationalist. None of the hockey players knew of his illness. It is a complete surprise and please accept my condolences.
