Dad, 14 years have gone by and we think about you all of the time. I still "Click Here" for the animals on the Animal Rescue Site every day. I wish you could have been here to see the 2024 Presidential election results. You, Grandpa Owen, Grandma Laura, Grandpa Rod and Grandma Jeanne all would be happy. We just celebrated Christmas - your favorite time for Johnny Mathis, spritz and pizelles, Walker's shortbread and malted milk balls. We love you! -Jeff, Debbie, Brooke, Laura, Archie, Violet and Kaz

Grandpa,
I remember when I used to sit on the floor in your office, talking about everything under the sun, and you calling me your "favorite grandson" (I'm the only one), but it meant a lot to me. I found myself laying in bed tonight, thinking about you and how much we all love you. You were gone too soon. I'll never forget Mom's words on that sad day when you were called to Heaven, but you're in a better place now. You'll always be close to me, in my heart, and one day I'll be with you again, we all will...
I love you Papa Dougie, and we'll see you soon.

Hi dad.
You are so greatly missed by all of us. I know you are in a better place where they bake Spritz cookies year round and you have an unlimited supply of cashews. I miss you in your blue robe and slippers on Christmas morning. And I play Johnny Mathis Christmas songs all of the time because I know you are listening :). I had a chocolate Checkers milkshake the other day, just for you.
This Christmas was not the same without you, but we will carry the wonderful memories we have of you with us always.
I love you and will see you again one day. Say hi to Baxter, Gizmo, Timber, Millie, Wednesday, Lily, Star, Sam and Flash. I know you are taking great care of them :)

Christmas time will always bring sweet memories of you, Dad... Spritz cookies, Walkers shortbread, Johnny Mathis Christmas songs, and searching for the perfect Blue Spruce Christmas tree. You wishing we would hurry up and open our presents from Santa on Christmas morning so we could eat breakfast. Even though these things make me feel sad today, I know in the future, these memories of you will give me great comfort and make me smile.
Merry Christmas, Dad. We love you and we miss you. You were the best!

Dianne and Debbie,
It was many, many years since I saw Doug and it was only at his memorial service in Minnesota that I met you, Dianne, and Debbie. Even though the reconnection with Doug was only through emails and a phone call or two, I felt a sense of closeness. Perhaps it was from recalling the fun and adventure we had playing together as preteens… in his house, in the park, and on his garage roof. They were good times, and like all kids, we were so unaware of the beautiful times, loving people, and challenges that await us as we get old.
Doug contacted me "out of the blue"at a time when one of his greatest challenges was just reaching a very difficult period. What I learned from him was that optimism and good spirit does not have to succumb to ill health… that family, friends, and pets defined his real life outside of work, and that he knew how to love.
I'm sorry I did not get to see him again, but I feel lucky that we reconnected, even for a short while.

Dear Dianne,
As we all know we will miss our great friend Doug, especially at this time of year, each year. In between those reminders we all share happy memories of this wonderful man. My most favorite memories are of Doug and his menagerie of little, furry creatures eating peanuts from his hands while you were enjoying your home at Superior Shores. And he had names for all of them!!
My thoughts are with you and your Family.
Best Wishes,

Thanks for the email.
I worked with Doug many times, always enjoyed that big smile, great sense of humor, and his larger than life laugh. He was a good guy, one of the best.
I wish you and your family a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Dianne,
I miss Doug and his emails. He always liked to converse about trucking besides flying. Fact is he had me meet him and go on a delivery run to Iowa one night so I could drive and practice before I started to drive for Ruan during the '76 strike. Also remember all of you being stranded when the flood washed out the bridge. Doug was always a pleasure to fly with. Remember the four of us going up Pike's Peak together and having Doug's favorite chicken fried steak that evening.
Merry Christmas to you and all the family.
Love,

Having started with Doug at NWA and living through all the turmoil through the years , I found that Doug was one that would always provide the stability and reason to the process and make all what would transpire more palitable . Dear Dianne,Debbie, Deirdre and family,
Doug was a wonderful person. It is with fond memories that I think back to when all of you lived next door to me. I remember seeing Doug out in your fenced yard playing with Tiger - tossing a frisbee or Tiger would be running through the sprinkler. Doug and I shared a common interest - dogs! We all loved dogs. Doug was also so nice to my brother and got him his first job at a gas station. I remember Debbie coming over to "play" with my Dad and "helping" him in his big garden. She was (and still is!) such a cute girl! Deirdre came along later so Debbie didn't have many playmates back then. My own Dad loved having her as his assistant gardener.
Doug' memorial service in June of this year was memorable and moving. There was a tent set up near the grave and it was needed because it rained during the service. It was almost as if the heavens were crying, too. Granddaughter Brooke wrote some beautiful words and played her recorder so nicely while everyone sang "Amazing Grace." Granddaughter Laura wrote about how her Grandpa called her "Meatball" because she loved meatballs. Grandchildren Jake and Grace also had wonderful things to say about their Grandpa as did many people at the gathering. Grandson Nicholas was too small to say or write anything but he was there, too. May Doug rest in peace.
I know from experience that this first Christmas without Doug will be very hard but rest assured that he is in heaven and is smiling down on you, plus all of your family and friends will be praying for you. You all did your very best to help Doug in every way possible and I think that was very pleasing in God's sight. You thought of Doug, not yourself. We don't know why God brought Doug home last Christmas Day but we do know that the Bible says in Romans 14:8, "Whether we live or die, we are the Lord's." My heart goes out to you and know that you are in my thoughts and prayers.
Your former neighbors, Victor and Divina, also send you a message of love and their prayers. They don't have a computer so I am sending their thoughts along to you.
I hope you all have a peaceful Christmas and may you continue to walk and grow in God's love and grace.
Love and hugs,
Judy K. & Charlie Brown

Dear Dianne,
It's hard to believe that almost a year has passed since we lost Doug. Christmas Day will never be the same for you, I'm sure. I know that you have lots of family around to keep you busy and happy. You and Doug were always an inspiration to me-always positive and ever the great senses of humor! Don't ever lose that! I think of Doug every day when I click on the Animal Rescue sight! He was an awesome advocate for animals-I love that about him! Much love and many hugs to you this Christmas.

Diane and family and friends... It's been almost a year since I wrote about the fond memory I had of Doug and the time he forgot to put the top on their hot air pop corn popper and there was popcorn all over their kitchen. But he just grinned. I loved his attitude.
I had never had that happen. But for the past couple of months - even though I check it - the top of my hot air popper has blown off three times and I've had to dash back to try to contain all the corn popping all over the counter and the floor! I can almost hear Doug laughing!

Uncle Snort was one of the smartest guys I ever met. I am so proud to have called him my uncle. I feel fortunate to have so many fond memories of him and our family together. Christmas Eve at Grandma's and hiding Thor's presents just to name a few! I always loved hearing his stories about flying planes and his travels around the world. Even after all he had accomplished he was so modest about everything.
Every time I saw him he made sure to ask me all about my schooling, the classes I was taking, he wanted to know details about what I was learning and how work was going. I was so impressed by his infinite wisdom, his sense of humor and wit, his perserverance and strength. But his love for animals is what touches me the most and what I will forever remember. He cared so much for the well being of animals and I'm sure all of his birds, cats, dogs and horses appreciated! His kind heart will be missed!

Dear Doug,
We had not seen each other since high school, so all my memories are very old. When we were in grade school at Farnsworth we played together after school, mostly at your home by Phalen Park. We would climb on your garage roof, stand in your Mom's "jiggling/shaking" weight-reducing machine (a machine that was probably outlawed years later for simply re-arranging organs), and playing with your pets.
We had fun together, then we went our own ways. Only about a year ago you ran across my name on the internet, and we began to communicate again.
I'm sad you are gone, because I really hoped to see you again. The only member of your family I feel I know, now, is your daughter Debbie. She has been wonderful through this tough period. You must have been (and still are) really grateful for having brought her into your life.
I wish her, your wife and all your family the best, especially the feeling of peace that you are OK. I will be at your memorial service in Minnesota later this year.
Love,
Jerry Rossow

Hello Doug,
Well, I’m sorry to hear that you have “flown West” on your last trip. I’ll miss you, buddy.
I remember you telling me the origin of that term. In ancient Egypt they would take the mummified remains of the Pharaoh across the Nile and into the western desert for burial. Everyone’s last trip was “heading West.”
I’m sure your family will miss you terribly, but you will all be together again.
You were about 5 years younger than me, but you signed up at Northwest two weeks ahead of me and so were senior to me by about 4 numbers. This meant we were usually flying the same planes in the same seat to the same destinations. We rarely got the chance to actually fly together. But we got to spend lots of layovers together in Tokyo or Hong Kong or Frankfurt. And we got to spend a lot of time sitting on reserve in New York or Detroit talking about family, friends, hobbies, etc, etc. They would have been painfully long periods of time but for the friendship and camaraderie we all shared.
When we finally did fly together we had some exciting times. When last we spoke, you reminded me of the time we flew in and out of large typhoons several times. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw that weather chart! There were Four typhoons in the Western Pacific all heading for Japan at the same time!
That was a fun time. Not exactly scary, but quite demanding.
You were a quiet sort of a chap and very cool under pressure. It was always relaxing to fly with you.
So, I guess the next time I see you will be when I check in at the Pearly Gates. It looks like you will still be senior to me. You will probably be giving flight instruction to some young angels.
Give my best wishes to your beautiful family.
Your buddy,
Bob

Dear Doug,
You are now at peace and rest forever, in a place where we will join you when it's our time. None of us were ready to let you go, but God had other plans, and He knows best! You will be missed so much by so many. We'll all miss your awesome e-mails! Dianne, Debbie, Dierdre and all of the grandkids will be in our thoughts and prayers. We will talking and thinking about you for a long time to come. You were an extraordinary animal lover and I thank you for sharing that with me. You'll be rewarded for that! Larry and I have fond memories of a neighbor and friend. We lit a candle for him in Switzerland when he was battling cancer and we were so happy when he got thru that. We prayed for him for a heart transplant and our prayers were answered. again but then the Lord said Doug I need you here.

Dear Dianne and Family. Our hearts go out to you and your family as we know you have had a great loss. Doug was so funny and yet at times he could be very serious. We are going to miss his political e-mails and picutures of all the animals and of course the pictures of the planes. He helped Bob mentally when Bob had cancer 4 years ago and his now in remission. We thank him for all his encouragement that he gave Bob at that time. We also want to thank you for being such wonderful neighbors in Cannon Falls. We are so glad we met you both. We could go on and on about Doug but it was his family that was with him through thick and thin. You are all to be blessed. God be with you and your family at this time and you can be sure that someday we will see Doug again. Bob & Ruth Johnson
