Gary MEITZ Obituary

Age 86, of Minneapolis Passed away peacefully on August 31, 2023. Ordained a Catholic Priest in 1963, Gary left the priesthood in 1969 led by the desire to share life with a family of his own. Ruth was his devoted partner and together they were a force of healing and support to many. Gary earned an MSW at the U of MN, became a probation officer supervisor in Hennepin County and, in retirement, a cabinetmaker. Throughout his life, Gary used creative ingenuity to show his love for people. He started "The Bakery" neighborhood probation office to directly serve South Minneapolis residents, created "Transition" to support former priests and nuns across the country as they adjusted to the real world, and gifted hand-crafted wooden tables to churches and nonprofits. Gary is survived by his wife of 53 years, Ruth; daughters, Anne (Andy) Beaton and Amy (Tim) Toonen; grandchildren, Cole, Alma, and Rece; and sister, Mary Winum. Preceded in death by parents, Roman and Gladys (Heeney) Meitz; and brothers Roman and Greg. A visitation will be held on Friday, September 22, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joan of Arc Church, 4537 3rd Avenue South in Minneapolis, with a funeral mass at 11:00 a.m. and lunch to follow. Memorials preferred to Minneapolis Park & Recreation Board.

Curiosity caused me to view this obituary. I worked for Roman Meitz at the Brookdale Sears Store for 5 years in the late 60's. He was a true friend to me and we got along famously. Condolences to the Family. Keep memories alive by speaking of Gary often.
