John LEVITT Obituary

Beloved husband, father, brother, and physician died suddenly and unexpectedly on August 8, 2023 of aortic dissection. He was born on June 12, 1933, to Dr. George and Evelyn Levitt. He grew up in St. Paul, attending Ramsey School and University High School, where he made lifelong friends. Jack attended the University of Minnesota, graduating with a straight A average, majoring in mathematics and physics. After completing his undergraduate degree, Jack went to the University of Minnesota Medical School, graduating with high honors in 1958. After an internship at Minneapolis General Hospital (now Hennepin County Medical Center) and a residency in nephrology at Montefiore Hospital in New York, he joined the Nephrology Faculty at the University of Minnesota. In 1970 he moved on to the Nicollet Clinic (later the Park Nicollet Clinic) and worked at the Blaisdell office for 53 years. He was devoted to his patients and they to him. His family always came first. He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren on family trips, sports, and activities. Jack could build or fix anything, and enjoyed the challenges involved. His pride and joy was the sukkah he built for the Jewish holiday of Sukkot, which he assembled every year for 52 years. With his typical originality, Jack converted the design of a Mongolian yurt into a kosher sukkah. Jack loved to cook and "whomped up" delicious Shabbat dinners. A true renaissance man, Jack also was an accomplished pianist and enjoyed playing George Gershwin, Cole Porter, and other popular artists. He leaves behind his wife, Rachel; his sons, Daniel (Suzanne), Matthew (Lisa), and Jeremy; his grandchildren are Charles, Rebecca, Joseph, and Gabriela. He is also survived by his younger siblings, Dr. Michael (Shirley), Dr. David (Dr. Carolyn), Judith, Elizabeth (Dr. Jerald) Sadoff; and many nieces and nephews. Jack's funeral will be 11:00 a.m. Friday August 11 at Adath Jeshurun Synagogue, 10500 Hillside Lane West, Minnetonka. The service will be live streamed. Shiva: Family, friends, coworkers, and patients are invited to the Levitt home at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday and Monday evening. Donations in his memory may be made to Adath Jeshurun Synagogue or a charity of the donor's choice.
