I first met John Spletts in 1989 on the Society Explorer. He was the lecturer onboard specialising in geology. He was a lovely guy and my family were very fond of him. We met him again on other trips we took to Antarctica. I was there with him when we discovered some interesting bird markings on rocks during a trek we made on an island somewhere. I believe he used the slide of the photo showing the markings in future lectures of his. I have often thought of John over the years and wondered where he would be in the world, still travelling and lecturing. I am very sorry to come across the news of his recent passing. I remember our Antarctic adventures well. I send my deepest sympathies to his family and friends for their loss.

I first met John in Antarctica in the 1970s. He devoted much of his career to the polar regions. We reconnected a few years back through e-mail and kept up a valued correspondence until a few weeks ago. I am very sorry to hear of his passing and extend my deep sympathy to his family

Brenda & John, I'm so sorry for your loss. It is so awful to lose a parent, especially when they are your best friend like my Mom was.
Hugs to you both!!

The news came, as many things do in these times, via a Facebook post from a fellow 'Antarctican' -- one in Australia! It stopped me in my tracks and left me reeling because I had just very recently spent an afternoon visiting with John; I brought out lunch. We just sat around and chatted about Polar, global, and local matters. I've driven out to Waconia from Mpls. every now and then for the past few years or so to spend some time with him like this -- I think we were likely the closest two Polar-friends in this region. I'm wondering if my visit with him was the last such; if so, although he's gone, I'm especially glad I did get to spend that time with him again. I'll miss those visits! I should add the I'll forever be grateful to John for helping me to get a lecturer position on a North Pole voyage. That made me, like him, on of the rare few humans to have had stood at both Poles (a good form of bi-polarity). My sincerest sympathies to his family at their loss. BTW I made sure that Minn. Public Radio did a feature about his life and passing.

My condolences to Brenda and family. You have been very helpful to my family and I can only hope to repay you in some small way for your kindness when we were in need. May God Bless you and your father.

I was saddened to learn of Johns passing. We first met in Antarctica many years ago when John was a member of a University of Minnesota geology team working in the Ellsworth Mountains, and I was a field representative with the National Science Foundation Our friendship endured over the years, even after we had both retired and were living in Maine. His contributions to all things Polar were very special and he will be greatly missed.
