Justin MCCARTHY Obituary

Born on February 9, 1924 Passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 11, 2019, at his home in Redding, CT. The fifth of eight children of Frederick Donough and Florence Ruth (Milton) McCarthy, Justin was born in St. Paul, Minnesota and attended St. Thomas Military Academy (STMA). He proudly served stateside in the Medical Corps during World War II from 1943-1946. Medical studies followed at the University of Chicago and then at the University of Minnesota where he earned a Bachelor of Medicine degree. In 1949 he married Inez Victoria Jensen. Employed by Wyeth Laboratories in the pharmaceutical industry, his job took the newlyweds first to Brainerd, MN, and in 1958, with three children, on to Radnor, PA after his promotion to Wyeth's home office there. In 2008 Justin and Inez moved to Redding, CT to be nearer to their 4th child, her family and their CT grandchildren. During his career at Wyeth he worked in sales, advertising, marketing, and promotion and retired as Director of Professional & Public Relations after 45 loyal years. Perhaps his greatest professional accomplishment was directing polio vaccine programs nationwide in 65 cities which immunized 129,000,000 Americans and contributed mightily to the eradication of that scourge in the US. Over his career, Justin received numerous accolades for his professional contributions and involvement with medical organizations, including the Group for the Advancement of Psychiatry (GAP), the American College of Osteopathy, the National Association of Nurses, the American Academy of Family Physicians, and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, among others. He tirelessly served his community in Radnor Township PA as Chairman of the Board of Health, Commissioner of Wayne Little League Baseball, and Founder & President of the Wayne Teen Center. In recognition of his citizenship, contributions, and leadership, he was named the 1971 Main Line Pennsylvania Man of the Year. A devout member of St. Katharine's Roman Catholic Church in Wayne, PA, he volunteered as an usher and lector eventually becoming the Head Lector. Not to be overlooked he also trained scores of altar servers and provided communion to shut-ins as a Minister of the Holy Eucharist. He was President of the Serra Club of Main Line PA to promote and foster vocations in the priesthood. In 1996, he was honored by Papal appointment as an Equestrian Commander of the Knights of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem, a lay organization dating to the Crusades. In 2010, St. Thomas Academy, formerly STMA, honored him with their Hames Alumni Honors Award for outstanding lifetime achievement. More recently, he was involved with various committees and activities at the Meadow Ridge Senior Living community in Redding, CT. Justin loved studying and following baseball as well as other sports, solving crossword puzzles, playing cribbage, eating chocolate cake, and making waffles for his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed reading books about World War II as well as biographies of all the American Presidents. Weekends would find him golfing, jogging, or working in his yard and rooting for the Philadelphia Phillies, Eagles, and Flyers. His wife, Inez, predeceased him after 66 years of marriage in 2015. He is survived by two dear siblings, Charles R. McCarthy, PhD. of Richmond, VA, and S. Mary Paula "Annie" McCarthy, of Minneapolis, MN plus four successful children, Patricia M. Graham (Thomas) of Bradenton, FL, Daniel V. McCarthy (Deborah) of Maplewood, NJ, John D. McCarthy (Janet) of Carlsbad, CA and Anne M. Brosko (T. Shawn) of Wilton, CT.
