Mary R. HANSTAD

Of Chevy Chase, Maryland Passed away on June 20, 2023 peacefully at her home surrounded by her 5 children. Mary was born on October 26, 1925 in St. Paul, Minnesota. She attended the Visitation School in St. Paul and went on to receive a Bachelors in Nursing at the University of Minnesota. Subsequently, she moved to New York City where she worked as an RN as well as taught birthing classes for expectant mothers. Mary met her husband, Hakon Hanstad in New York. They were married on January 27, 1961. From there they moved to Chevy Chase, Maryland and raised 5 children. Mary was a devoted mother and wife, as well as a successful realtor for 20 years. The family has many great memories vacationing every summer in Bethany Beach, Delaware. Mom was a true blessing for our family - her children always felt supported and loved. We will miss her dearly. Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Hakon and her sister, Anne Welliver of Grand Rapids, Minnesota. She is survived by her 5 children - Charlotte Hanstad of Chevy Chase, MD, Ryland Hanstad of Holliston, MA, Tim Hanstad of Johnston, IA, Kristen Kern of Tampa, FL and Melissa Phillips of Bethesda, MD as well as 11 grandchildren and 1 greatgrandchild.
