Mary Shepard Obituary

A lifelong partisan for social justice Passed away peacefully on July 17 surrounded by her family. A good and loyal wife, steadfast mother, and role model for her grandchildren and many others, she was 91. BornNovember 18, 1918 in New York City, the fourth daughter of Ruth and Lansing Reed, Mary graduated from St. Timothy's School and attended Vassar College before marryingRoger Shepard, Jr. in 1939. In 1946, she moved with Roger back to St. Paul, her husband's hometown. Mary was passionate about fairness and justice. Employing her considerable research and writing skills she fought against racial, gender, and economic discrimination, first through establishment party politics, then, with a band of like-minded women, beyond them. Within her own Episcopal Church she fought for the ordination of women. Radicalized by the Vietnam War, she became involved in the anti-warorganization Clergy and Laity Concerned and was an early supporter of Women Against Military Madness. In the late 1980's, frustrated by the established media's uncritical coverage of foreign policy, she became an advocate for the media watchdog group Fairness and Accuracy in Media. She traveled widely and served on the boards of Macalester College and the Episcopal Church Pension Fund, among many organizations with which she was involved. A lifelong crusader for the causes in which she believed, she never lost her wry sense of humor or her compassion for the disenfranchised. Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Roger in 2004. She is survived by her daughter, Kay Shepard and sons, Lansing (Gayle), Whit (Andrea), and Tom (Wanda); six grandchildren and three great grandchildren and many, many nieces and nephews and their children. She will be missed tremendously. The family wishes to thank the staff of New Harmony Care Center for their caring and compassion. We are especially grateful to Deborah Kirchoff, Mary's long-time caregiver, for all the love and support she generously gave. A private service is planned, but donations may be made in Mary's memory to Women Against Military Madness, 310 East 38th Street, Suite 225 Minneapolis, MN 55409, or to Books to Brilliance, PO Box 56716, Albuquerque, NM 87187 or to a charity of one's choice. 678 South Snelling Avenue 651-698-3878

The Shepards warmly opened their home to Tom and Kaye's friends countless times. The times I spent with Mary and her family there are a wonderful part of my life. Mary said she loved seeing visitors in the pool, playing tennis or just relaxing and talking. She truly loved to share, and she had so much to offer. She was often exasperated with the way the country was moving but never wavered in her commitment to social justice. My deepest sympathy to the Shepard family.

Tom,
Our deepest sympathy to you and your family for the loss of your mother. We knew her briefly through St. Ansgar's but have always remembered her passion for righteousness and justice.
We wish you peace in this time of great sadness.

I told my partner Susan a few days ago that I was planning to give my dear friend Mary Shepard a call, but I see I missed her by just four days. Mary was a mentor and comrade for me in the struggle for social justice. I met her in 1980 when I moved to Minneapolis to assist the Coalition for US-Iran Understanding. We spent hours browsing through her voluminous clipping files, and discussing her having grown up with many of the influential names in US history whose policies she so actively opposed. She was truly a warrior for justice, and I so regret not having kept in better touch with her.

Our community has lost a voice for Peace and social justice causes. I will dearly miss Mary. I admired her wit, her charm, and her genuine compassion for the issues at hand. She inspired me, she always made me laugh, and I never left her library without feeling just a little more enlightened. She was a class act, she walked the walk, and knowing her was a privilege. My sincerest condolences to Mary's wonderful family. I know her passing will leave a hole in their midst for a long time to come.

I knew Mary through my good friend Father Bill Teska. Mary was a champion of everything fair and just and a fighter against injustices. Plus, she and her pal Janet Watson invested in more than one of our avant guard West Bank social enterprises. What a sweet, kind and generous spirit. I and so many others are sad to hear of her passing, but feel so fortunate to have known Mary. - Warren Hanson

" She was a citizen of impressive intelligence, class and grit. To Mary, lifelong learning is an obligation lest we lose our perspective on truth and justice . It was a privilege to have known her and to have learned from her.Mary will remain evergreen in our hearts, a treasured, impressive and gracious example to us all. "

I have only known Mary Shepard for a few years, but found that she was a most loving, caring person. She will be missed by her friends at Holy Trinity-St. Anskar's Episcopal Church in Minneapolis.
