I met Robert while writing "Once Upon A Time In War: The 99th Division in WWII." Lovely man. I met him once at the St. Paul airport on my way to a 99th Division reunion. He took the trouble to drive to airport to talk. Wish we could spent more time together. Robert Humphrey

Mary Beth & Todd - The next few days will be difficult for your family. My deepest sympathy is extended to your family. I went through this process less than a year ago. I know exactly what you are going through. You are not alone, I have your family in my thoughts and prayers. God Bless you both for the care you gave "Bob".

I first talked to Bob early in 2001. I was a stranger, calling about his service in WWII because I was trying to learn more about the 99th Infantry Division. Bob was friendly, helpful, modest, and happy someone was interested in the experiences and hardships men like him endured in fighting that war. Subsequently I began to write essays for the Checkerboard, the Division's newspaper. Bob encouraged me to keep going and write a book, which I finally finished in September 2006, after interviewing 340 of his fellow GIs. I regularly sent the early essays and later chapters to Bob, who always offered his sage advice and helpful suggestions. I met him briefly at the Minneapolis airport in 2002, and we sat talked as if he were old friends. I called him on many occasions, and we exchanged emails regularly. Bob was a wonderful man--kind, supportive, upright, a real gentleman. The country was lucky to have him in WWII and his family was blessed to have such a wonderful man. His passing is a sad day. We shared some indelible experiences in WW II. He was a patriot that his family should be proud of. He also had a great sense of humor. He was my best friend. Eldon Engel

We are sorry to hear that Bob has left us. We will always remember him coming down the hall whistling with a smile on his face. He has been a wonderful neighbor and we have enjoyed knowing him and living next door to him. Marilyn & Al Anderson (Applewood Neighbors)
