Dr. Smith was a amazing doctor! He helped me for over 20 years. I looked forward to seeing him everytime I went to see him for my appointment. He was my favorite doctor. His smile was the best! I also have learning disabilitys and he was great at helping me understand what was going on. I met him in Colorado Springs and came down there to see him. I will always remember and miss my favorite doctor!

My heart is heavy with sadness, but my gratitude to Dr. Smith warms it and heals me. I appreciated him so much. Misdiagnosed for over 30 years and he got it right immediately. He gave me back my life. Rest In Peace, Doc Smith.

My son has been a patient of Dr. Smith's for 14 years. We considered him a friend and looked forward to seeing him in 2 weeks. I will miss his gentleness about him, his friendly smile and just the all around amazing person he was.

So sad and scared that he is gone. He gave us hope for our son Eddie who has CFTD for the past 10 years. He took amazing care of Ed and we are forever thankful for him. I had the pleasure of working with Dr. Smith at Gillette. He was one of the kindness hearted people I knew there. His compassion and care he gave to his patients was above and beyond. He was always so kind to staff as well.
He surely will be missed here on earth, but God has a wonderful angel with him now.

Dr. Smith treated my son Pasha for a muscle disorder. Pasha has developmental disabilities as a result of abuses he suffered before being placed in a Russian orphanage. Beside the outstanding medical care Dr. Smith provided was the wonderful "bedside" manner and thoughtfulness he shared with Pasha. As a parent I was reassured by his skill and kindness and there is no one else I would trust my son's care with. Thank you Dr. Smith (and staff at Gillette) for making such a difference. God bless you and your family.

I had the great privilege of working with and learning from Dr. Smith for many years as a young therapist and manager at Gillette Children's. The lessons he taught and wisdom he imparted transcended patient care, and helped create a culture of true understanding and caring among the neuromuscular community in the Twin Cities. Moreover, I was lucky enough to count Steve as a friend-and enjoyed a good glass of wine or two over the years. I'll miss him!

My sister said it best for me when I told her the news: (as a patient of Dr. Smith for 18 years) he brought me comfort and helped me to understand my world.

I began seeing Dr. Smith in 2009 when he first diagnosed me. I always felt comfortable with him as he was a kind, gentle and down to earth man. He was always quick with a comeback to one of my many wisecracks. I am going to miss him more than simple words can say.

Dr Smith will be missed . He was always so kind to my son Jonathan who has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Enjoyed the clinic visits with him, he always made Jonathan feel important and at ease. ( and mom too) His shoes will be hard to fill.

Such heart breaking news! Dr. Smith was such a kind and funny man. He constantly encouraged our son to use his brain, as he said, he could do anything he wanted with that. He was our main Dr. through this whole journey with SMA. A pioneer in the fight against this disease. With many tears, we will miss him in our lives.

I am so sorry to hear of his passing. He was a wonderful doctor to both of my children with SMA. He helped us through so many times when hospitalized and things were not improving. He made unexpected trips to meet with the doctors caring for them, giving advice on how to treat - and he was always right! He was a very kind and caring man and will truly be missed.

Dr. Stephen Smith was there when we first found out about Hans' Duchenne muscular dystrophy. He was kind, careful, prepared and always we felt we were important to him. He was the best doctor.

Dr. Smith was an amazing physician. He was rather brilliant and thought out of the box, which enabled him to help many of us patients who were written off by other physicians. His compassion and kindness changed hundreds of lives for the better, including mine. I am forever grateful. From our very first meeting on April 10, 1990, when my fear was overwhelming and my heart was breaking, Dr. Smith placed a calming hand on my shoulder and told me it would be okay, they would find out what was going on with our 3 (1/2) year old son. I knew then, whatever it was, we could overcome our fear with knowledge and repair the brokenness of our hearts through the kindness of people like this man standing before us. His kind, calm demeanor again came across through his voice a few years ago when our son had a medical crisis and we didn't know what to do. I will never forget the hour he spent on the phone with my husband, nor him giving us his personal telephone number with the assurance that we could call anytime we needed. That was Dr. Smith, he genuinely cared about his patients and their families. Our clinic visits will not be the same without him and that makes me sad, however, what brings me joy is the thought that all his patients in Heaven are being reunited with him now and he gets to witness them running and jumping...no more wheelchairs...no more braces...no more struggling against a relentless disease. So that brings me joy beyond the sadness. RIP gentle man, we shall never forget you.

I've been a patient of Dr Smith for almost 30 years. He wasn't just my doctor he was my friend and I loved him. Every accomplishment I've achieved in my life was because of his care. I was able to achieve my potential and life time goals because of him. This world cannot afford to lose people like Dr. Smith.

I am so saddened to hear of this wonderful man's passing. He was truly the best there is! We went through many years of tests and procedures to try and figure out what my son had. On a visit from Manhattan to Colorado Springs, 19 years agoDr. Smith went over my son's records and tests...walked in to the room and said...I'm pretty sure I know what it is but Ill need a biopsy to confirm. He did the biopsy himself and confirmed his suspicions of Mitochondrial Myopathy...putting years of tests and procedures behind us. He then biopsied and diagnosed me with the same. For the many years to follow he became the go-to for all of our other doctors because he was the only one that knew about this rare condition. He was so knowledgeable! I moved awaybut returned for visits and sought his knowledge. I have never found another Dr. Smithand never will. This is so devastating to hear. He will truly be missed by so many. My sincere condolences to his wife and family.

I first met Steve as a child neurology fellow in his neuromuscular clinic and have had the privilege of working with Steve as a colleague at Gillette. I am very sorry and very surprised to hear of Steve Smith's death - he was always the epitome of robust spirit and love of life that is completely incongruous with his now being gone. Having worked with Steve for decades, and learned many lessons along with him about neuromuscular disease and how to optimize distribution of care, I am certainly grateful for the time that we had together. After we both left Minnesota I would always enjoy seeing him at meetings and am sorry that his smiling face will no longer join us.
