Nathan Whitman Obituary

Nathan Whitman passed away peacefully Saturday Feb. 18, 2006 in Ukiah at the age of 87.

He was born in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania on Nov. 8, 1918 and was the eldest of seven siblings.

Nathan was an excellent athlete who played semi-pro baseball and professional football before entering the service.

He served with the First Division Combat Engineers (The Big Red One) as a Motor Sergeant and participated in eight invasions including Africa, Sicily and Normandy under General George Patten in World War II. He was personally decorated by President Harry S. Truman in Washington D.C. 1945 with the Presidential Citation and Two Oak Leaf Clusters.

He moved his family to Southern California in 1953 and later moved to Mendocino County in 2003.

He was employed with Hughes Aerospace for 32 years as a Quality Assurance Engineer. He loved The Ukiah Symphony Orchestra, community concerts, Bill Langford's piano performances at Brookside and Sundays in the Park.

He is survived by his son Lee Whitman, daughter-in-law Cathy Jones, grandchildren Shane Whitman, and Katy O'neill, and 3 siblings. Wife Ruth Whitman and daughter Renee O'neill preceded him in death.

He was a loving man who touched the lives of many.

He loved his family, friends and his country.
