Paul Calderon Obituary

Paul Lopez Calderon passed away peacefully on July 20, 2004, at home after a lengthy illness.
Paul was the son of Seferino and Angela Calderon. He was born on the Camarillo Ranch in Ventura Co. California.
Paul moved his family to Sonoma Co. and settled in Healdsburg. He became experienced in viticulture and was able to pursue his passion for horses and sheepdogs when he became gainfully employed by William S. Walters, who owned several small ranches comprised of vineyard, prunes, alfalfa and a small sheep herd. After Mr. Walter's sale of his 300-acre ranch to Dr. Griffin, now the site of "The Hop Kiln Winery", Mr. Walters moved everyone to the 2-story ranch house on his 50-acre ranch where Paul and his wife looked after him until his passing in 1966.
Moving to Cloverdale, Paul found employment with the Black family who were developing their Palomino Lakes Ranch. Paul managed the stables that provided horseback-riding recreation to the Black's newly developed Palomino Lakes, K.O.A. Campground.
Paul moved his family from Cloverdale in 1972, relocating to Guerneville where he gained employment with Korbel Winery. He initially maintained Korbel's private stable, caring and training their personal remuda of horses. Within a short period of time his vineyard experience became apparent and Korbel relocated Paul and family to the Hedgpeth Ranch where Korbel leased 150-acres of vineyard. Paul retired from Korbel in 1983.
Retiring to Mendocino Co., Paul kept himself busy. Spending some time in Willits as a transportation driver for the Willits Senior Center, but the majority of his time was spent in the Covelo area. Throughout his life he maintained a position for the pursuit of his lifelong passion of horses and sheepdogs. He sought every opportunity to sit atop and work his horse. His greatest satisfaction came from personally training and working his own sheepdogs.
He is survived by his children, his grandchildren and his sisters and brothers, Eufrasia Chaparro, Ramona Calderon, Charles Calderon and John Calderon Jr.

Twenty years has passed. Seems like a blink of an eye, and yet feels so long ago. You live in my heart, and I hear your words daily in my head. On days where strength seems so far from me, I hear you telling me. Love you dad.
