You may have known TY through his role as teacher or principal at Mother Lode Christian or Summerville Elementary during his forty-five years in education. TY was a husband, father, brother, son, grandfather, uncle, friend, pastor, teacher, principal, mentor, coach, surfer, snowboarder, golfer, hiker, traveler, author, TPRD board member, minister at the county juvenile detention center, and a passionate follower of Jesus Christ.
Born on April 14, 1950, his parents Tom and Miriam raised him and his brothers, Jim, Fred and David, and sister Nancy, in Oceanside, California.
As a youth TY loved baseball and the beach and fell in love with surfing. After high school, he attended USC and majored in Architecture. He took a break from school to backpack through Europe and his life changed forever on a train in Norway. A pastor asked him "how can you live
your whole life and neglect what Jesus Christ has done for you?" That question rocked him to his core and when he returned to the US he gave his life to Jesus at a Florida Salvation Army rescue mission. Everything changed after that. He transferred from USC to Westmont College and changed his major to Religious Studies and English Literature. He met his wife, Pat, and they were married for forty five years.
He began his teaching career at Mother Lode Christian School. TY and Pat love Tuolumne and made it their permanent home where they raised their four children, Thomas, Daniel, Patrick and Hope. His 12 grandchildren and the time he spent with them, brought him great joy!
Yosemite, the Emigrant Wilderness, Dodge Ridge, Europe and the beautiful beaches of Kauai and Oceanside were his favorite destinations.
TY loved and served the youth and families of our community. His last prayer was that he could spend the rest of his days worshipping God in humility and gratitude. God answered that prayer when he passed into eternity on Sept. 2. The question TY would ask you is, "have you considered what Jesus Christ has done for you?"
His family will be posting a film remembering and celebrating TY's life. It will be posted at www.raggedwoodproductions.com
in the next several weeks. TY's family has chosen the following four organizations for those who would like to give in his memory. 1. Summerville Elementary Student Scholarship Fund 2. Hidden Treasures of the Sierras (a ministry at the local detention center - P.O. Box 821 Tuolumne, CA). 3. Motherlode Christian School - TY Atkins Grandchildren Scholarship Fund 4. Tuolumne Park and Rec. Community Fund.
