Arthur Young Obituary

Arthur Price Young of Manchester, New Hampshire died October 15, 2024. Born July 29, 1940 in Boston, Massachusetts, Arthur was the son of Arthur Price Young and Marion Freeman Young. He graduated from Tufts University with a major in political science and served in the U.S. Air Force from 1964 to 1968 as an education and training officer. Art returned to school to earn a degree in library and information science from Syracuse University and later a PhD in Library Science from the University of Illinois in 1976.

During his career he served as a reference librarian at SUNY College at Cortland, NY, Assistant Dean of Libraries at the University of Alabama, Dean of Libraries at the University of Rhode Island and the University of South Carolina before his final and longest service as Dean of Libraries at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, IL. Always active in his profession, he served as President of the Illinois Library Association in 2001 and was the author of several books and many articles concerning library history and administration. He retired in 2006.

Art was a lifetime member of the American Library Association and a longtime member of the Organization of American Historians, the Illinois Library Association, the Caxton Club of Chicago and the Horatio Alger Society. Preservation of history and information plus his love of books inspired Art to assemble several book collections. His collection of World War I juvenile literature resides in the rare book department of the library at the University of Virginia. The largest of his collections with over 2500 volumes on U.S. Presidents and the presidency is held by the New Hampshire Institute of Politics at St. Anslem College in Manchester, NH.

Art was predeceased by his parents and sister Deborah. Art is survived by his wife Patricia Foss Young, sons Christopher P. Young of Sherman Oaks, CA and John M. Young and his wife Kathie and grandson Evan of Valparaiso, IN and brother Stephen E. Young and wife Joanne of Durham, NH and their children Allison and Stephen.

Sorry to hear about Art Young's passing. As a Dean at Northern Illinois University Library, he did a lot for enhancing the true faculty status of
the Library Faculty. I was grateful for his support of my conference contributions to librarianship. I hope he got to enjoy years of retirement with his family.
