Edwin I. Muhonen

NEW IPSWICH - Edwin Ilmar Muhonen, 88, of New Ipswich, died Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2012, at his home with his family by his side.

He was born in Greenville on Nov. 25, 1923, the son of the late Ilmari Muhonen and Alla (Gedenburg).

Edwin was a lifelong resident of New Ipswich. He served his country in the South Pacific during World War II in the U.S. Navy. He was a first-class motor mechanic on the LST 226. Later in life, Edwin worked in heavy equipment repair for the Seppala and Aho Construction Company. Above all, Edwin loved spending time with his family.

Edwin is survived by his wife of 60 years, Johanna (Somero); seven sons, Keith and his wife, Kathleen, Norman and his wife, Dorothy, Timothy and his wife, Rachel, all of New Ipswich, Michael and his wife, Norma, of Greer, S.C., Charles and his wife, Coreen, of Greer, S.C., Raymond of Jaffery; daughter-in-law Ethel of Washington; two daughters, Katherine and husband Gary Somero of New Ipswich and Deloris and husband Timothy Seppanen of Watertown, S.D.; his brother, Walter and Sylvia Muhonen; and his sister, Ellen and Leo Somero. Edwin is also survived by his 59 grandchildren and 70 great-grandchildren.

Edwin was predeceased by his son, Kenneth, and two great-grandchildren.

services: Friends and family are warmly invited to attend calling hours being held today from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Michaud Funeral Home, 32 Maple St., Wilton. Services will be held Monday, Nov. 26, at the Apostolic Lutheran Church, 117 Goen Road, New Ipswich, with a graveside service to follow at Smith Village Cemetery, New Ipswich.
