Ewart Balcom Obituary

Ewart Clare Balcom died peacefully on December 31, 2021 in Manchester, NH, at the age of 81 years, following an extended battle with cancer. His tenacity and determination to understand and manage his health was remarkable to the end.

Born to Edith M. (Longley) and Neal G. Balcom in Malden, MA on March 10, 1940, he was the youngest of five children, spent his youth in Pelham, NH, and graduated from Nashua High School. In addition to careers in both restaurant management and construction, Ewart served in the US Army National Guard for more than 30 years. Retiring honorably as a First Sergeant, many benefitted from his strong leadership, guidance and initiative. He received numerous commendations including, New Hampshire National Guard Soldier of the Year in 1978.

Ewart was a man of faith and strong conviction with an independent nature, positive attitude and determined spirit. He expected much of himself and others. He could be counted on to help his fellow servicemen, neighbors, friends and strangers alike, regardless of personal consideration. Always one with a story, life lesson or a funny anecdote, he could talk to anyone about anything. Ewart was as comfortable on a bulldozer as he was in the kitchen or in his full dress uniform. Family was important to Ewart and he spent much of his time in recent years researching his ancestral genealogy to Paradise Nova Scotia and beyond to the Mayflower.

Ewart is survived by his three daughters, Deborah Dunne, Gayle Balcom, and Stephanie Davis, his brother, Paul Balcom, his beloved wife, Joanne Balcom, four step-children, Mark, Stephen, and David Worchester and Anne Hill, 10 grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, and an extended family whom he cherished. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Arnold and Manning Balcom, sister Muriel Kinsley, and adored niece, Edith Weiler.

Ewart was not a man one could easily forget and we know his legacy lives on.

No service will be held at this time as a celebration of Ewart's life is planned for the summer of 2022. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in his honor to Liberty House, Inc. 221 Orange St. Manchester, NH 03104 or online at https://libertyhousenh.org. . In addition he was always an upbeat and positive person who could lift your spirits just being in his presence. He was truly a great man and the world will miss his radiant soul. Rest in peace.
