Herbert Fletcher Obituary
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Herbert E. Fletcher II, 84, of Washington and Palm Beach, Fla., and formerly of Boston, Chelmsford, Mass., and Nashua, N.H., died Nov. 18, 2008, at The Community Hospice of Washington of complications from heart failure.
He was born in Lowell, Mass., son of Harold H. Fletcher and Edith (Proctor) Fletcher.
Mr. Fletcher attended Kimball Union Academy in Meriden, N.H., and received his Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering from Lehigh University in 1948.
He served as a 1st Lt. navigator on a B-24 in the U.S. Army Air Corps in the China-Burma-India Theater during World War II.
Until his retirement, Mr. Fletcher was president and treasurer of the H.E. Fletcher Co. in Westford, Mass., a family quarry business founded in 1881. He remained involved with the industry and the company in a consulting role until his death.
He had also served as president of the National Building Granite Quarries Association, director of the Union National Bank in Lowell, and director of the Engineers Club in Boston. An avid golfer, he was a member of Vesper Country Club in Tyngsboro, Mass., Cape Arundel Golf Club in Kennebunkport, Maine, Burning Tree Golf Club in Washington, and Everglades Club in Palm Beach, Fla.
Mr. Fletcher also enjoyed tennis, skiing, fishing, and hunting. He particularly enjoyed bird shooting, and was a member of Pope's Island Gun Club in Chincoteague, Va.
Mr. Fletcher was an avid reader who enjoyed discussing world affairs and politics.
He was the widower of Elizabeth (Tennant) Fletcher, who died in 1975.
Family includes his wife, Jeannine (Garstka Cusson) Fletcher; four children, Polly Fletcher of Lawrence, Mass., Edie Flynn of Jamestown, R.I., Hobie Fletcher of Oceanside, Calif., and Libby Morissette of Pembroke, N.H.; four grandchildren.
SERVICES: Friends may call at Blake Funeral Home, 24 Worthen St., Chlemsford, from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday. A brief service will be held. Burial will be private at Fairview Cemetery, 55 Main St., Westford, Mass. A memorial service will be held in Washington at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Boys and Girls Club of Greater Lowell, 657 Middlesex St., Lowell, Mass. 01852.

I am very honored to have known Herb, he was a great source of influence to me throughout the years. I will always remember our lunches with friends where we would talkfor hours and the "stoli" on the rocks, Burning Tree and the annual Pope Island Gun Club gatherings. Herb you are a gentleman among gentlemen. I will truly miss you but never forget you.

Mr. Fletcher,
Sir, I would just like to say thank you for your service and sacrifice for our Country when you served with the U.S. Army Air Forces during WW II as a B-24 "Liberator" bomber crewman fighting the Japanese in the CBI. The Men who served in the CBI were some of the unsung heroes of the War-they served in a part of the World that was mostly forgotton or ignored by the the media under incredible hardships with very little equipment and supplies and often undermanned-yet they managed to occupy a large number of the Japanese military that could have been used in the Pacific against other American forces. And to your family and loved ones, I wish to extend my deepest sympathy.

As we approach Thanksgiving this year I am sadden to hear the Herb has passed away. He has touched many of us in the Granite Industry and to loose him is a significant loss. I will most certainly remember Herb Fletcher as one who lived a full life, and who gave through mentoring individuals like me. I only hope that I can leave such a legacy. This Thanksgiving I am thankful that I had the privilege to know Herb and send my sincere condolences to his family and those that knew him.

My condolences to the Fletcher family. I worked at the quarry in Westford for 32 years and remember Herb as a great guy. He will be missed by many.

I will always fondly recall working with Herb over the years at Fletcher Granite, and traveling with him around Washington, DC. He was the granite industries' abassador, forever gracious and kind. Herb's impact on the industry will not quickly be forgotten. My deepest sympathies to his family, friends, and colleagues.
