Dr. James M. Carew DDS

James Carew Obituary

Dr. James M. ("Jim") Carew, long-time resident of Deering and Hillsborough, New Hampshire, died on March 21, 2018, in the loving presence of family in Petaluma, California, where he has been buried. He was 85 years old.

Born to Joseph and Catherine Carew on September 12, 1932, in Cohasset, Massachusetts, Jim was the ninth of ten children, the Carews' youngest son. In his youth, he was an active member of 4H, an avid musician, photographer, and skier, and an assistant in running the family ski tow in Deering, New Hampshire, from 1947 to 1957. Jim graduated from Hillsborough High School in 1950, attended Keene State College, and later received his Bachelor's degree from St. Anselm College. Having served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War as a dental technician, he earned a degree as Doctor of Dental Surgery at the University of Maryland in Baltimore. On October 1, 1963, he opened in Hillsborough a private dental practice which thrived for nearly forty years.

Jim was a devoted parishioner of St. Mary's in Hillsborough, beloved by that community for his service as an usher and in several other capacities. He also enjoyed active membership in the New Hampshire Dental Society and was elected in 2004 to serve in the New Hampshire House of Representatives on the Election Law Committee. For much of his adult life, Jim was a supporter of numerous civic and political organizations, including the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Contoocook Valley Republican Committee, and Hillsborough County Republican Committee, hosting (then-candidate) Ronald Reagan at a fundraiser during the 1980 US Presidential election.

Jim is survived by four children - Camille Franicevich of Petaluma, CA; Judd Labarthe of Singapore; Marya Machart of Hamilton, MA; and Brigid Carew of San Rafael, CA. He is also survived by five grandchildren. He was survived by his oldest brother, Joseph E. Carew of Sterling, MA, who died April 23, 2018, and is survived by his youngest sister, Anne Carew, of Concord, NH; by dozens of beloved nieces and nephews; and by over 100 great- and great-great nieces and nephews.

Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, May 18, 2018, in the sanctuary of St. John the Evangelist Church at 72 South Main Street in Concord, New Hampshire. In lieu of flowers, donations are humbly and gratefully received in Jim's honor at Hospice of Petaluma, 416 Payran Street, Petaluma, CA 94952.
