John Fogarty Obituary
On Friday, September 26, 2025, John Edward "Jack" Fogarty III, 89, of Ossipee, New Hampshire, passed away following a period of declining health. A resident of the Mountain View Community, he was surrounded by his family at the time of his passing.
Jack was born in Dover, New Hampshire, in 1936 to John E. Fogarty Jr. and Ruth (Beane). He graduated from Exeter High School and went on to earn a teaching certificate at Keene State College. While at Exeter High, he met the love of his life, Carolyn Barnea. They married in 1955 and built a loving family together, raising seven children.
Jack dedicated his life to serving his community in many capacities. He taught Driver Education at Exeter High School, served as both a firefighter and police officer for the Town of Exeter, and in 1971 became the first full-time police chief of Ossipee, New Hampshire. He served as chief until his retirement in 1988. Following his retirement, Jack briefly worked at the Ames Department Store in Ossipee before returning to law enforcement as a Railroad Police Officer for the New Hampshire Northcoast Railroad, where he patrolled the rails and rights-of-way between Ossipee and Rollinsford.
While living in Ossipee, Jack devoted countless hours to community service. He served as a hockey coach, Cubmaster, selectman, welfare officer, and library trustee-if there was a role to be filled, he likely took it on at some point.
Jack was especially proud of his service with the New Hampshire Association of Chiefs of Police. A lifetime member, he served as its president from 1983 to 1984 and continued attending meetings for years after his retirement, enjoying both the mission of the association and the camaraderie of his fellow chiefs.
Over the years, Jack earned many titles-"Chief," "Coach," "Dad"-but his favorite was "Papa." He cherished time with his family and leaves behind eleven grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren (with more sure to come). He rarely missed an opportunity to cheer them on, whether from the sidelines, at hockey rinks, in gyms, or by the fishing hole.
Jack was predeceased by his beloved wife, Carolyn (Barnea) Fogarty; his brothers, Paul Fogarty Sr. and Alan Fogarty; his son, John E. Fogarty IV; and his grandson, John E. Fogarty V.
He is survived by his sister, Gail Keach of North Hampton; his children: Patricia Stockman (James) of Tuftonboro, NH; Kathleen Jones (Michael) of Madison, NH; Mary-Louise Gilbert (Barry) of Brookline, NH; Thomas Fogarty (Lori) of Center Ossipee, NH; James Fogarty (Sara) of Moultonborough, NH; and Anne Kinmond (Scott) of Loudon, NH.
Calling hours will be held on Friday, October 17, 2025, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Lord Funeral Home, 50 Moultonville Road, Center Ossipee, NH. A private burial will take place at a later date in Exeter, where Jack will be laid to rest beside Carolyn.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Ossipee Concerned Citizens at https:/occnh.org.
