Keith Hanscom Obituary

MANCHESTER - Keith A. Hanscom, 84, educator and N.H. State Employees union leader, died Jan. 3, 2013, after a long struggle with Alzheimer's disease.

Born in Augusta, Maine, on May 16, 1928, he was the only son of John and Audrey (Whitman) Hanscom. He resided in the Queen City most of his life.

Mr. Hanscom was educated at the New Hampton School. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in education from Plymouth State Teachers College in 1952 as well as a master's degree from Northeastern University. He did his doctoral work at Boston University.

During the Korean War, he served with the U.S. Army.

Early in his career, he was an elementary teacher with the Manchester School District. Afterward, he served as a consultant at the N.H. Department of Education in the Title One Program for 30 years.

Mr. Hanscom spent his lifetime devoted to education and the delivery of education services to children. In an unassuming manner, Keith played a real-life Santa Claus to hundreds of children with the Toys for Tots campaigns.

He was a member of the Manchester Teachers Guild, a lifelong member of the National Education Association, and the State Employees Association. He was a fourth-degree knight of the Knights of Columbus. He received many state and national awards for his distinguished service.

Mr. Hanscom was a longtime communicant of St. Catherine of Siena Church. A man ahead of his time, he was an early advocate of recycling. He collected recyclable cans in Department of Education buildings, which were then used to raise funds for Toys for Tots.

Family members include his wife of 56 years, Madeline (Welch) Hanscom; a son, Robert Keith Hanscom and his wife, Helen; a daughter, Joan M. Hanscom; four grandchildren, Charles Hanscom, Sarah Lavoie, Kimberly Sommariba and Luke Hanscom; and five great-grandchildren.

.

services: A memorial Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Tuesday at 11 a.m. in St. Catherine of Siena Church, Webster Street, Manchester.

Urn burial with military honors will take place in the N.H. State Veterans Cemetery, Boscawen, at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to the N.H. Alzheimer's Association, 5 Bedford Farms Drive, Suite 20, Bedford 03110.
