Lauri Lassila Obituary

RINDGE -- Lauri Albert Lassila, 80, died Sept. 15, 2008, at Harborside-Pheasantwood, Peterborough.

He was born in Veteli, Finland, March 23, 1928, to Selma (Aho) and Antti Anselmi. He spent his early years in Finland working on the family farm.

He moved to Baraga, Mich., in 1963, to Fitchburg, Mass., in 1965 and settled in Ashby, Mass., in 1969. He lived in Rindge the last few years.

He was employed at Seppala & Aho Construction for 25 years as a welder. In his retirement years, he worked at Market Basket in Rindge.

His hobbies included power lifting, woodcarving, sculpting, metal work and dancing.

Known for his strength, he began competing in power lifting competitions after his retirement and won several titles in his age bracket.

He was a member of Revontulet Folk Dancers for more than 20 years and was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church in Fitchburg, Mass..

Family members include his wife, Pirkko (Anttila) Lassila of Rindghe; a son, Mikael Lassila of Rindge; two grandchildren; a sister, Ritva Rikula and a brother, Paavo Lassila, both of Finland.

SERVICES: The funeral will be Thursday at 11 a.m. in Messiah Lutheran Church, 750 Rindge Road, Fitchburg, Mass., with the Rev. David Batchelder officiating. Burial will follow in Glenwood Cemetery, Mass.

Memorial donations may be made to Messiah Lutheran Memorial Fund, 750 Rindge Rd., Fitchburg, MA 01420.
