Michael Dupre Obituary

MANCHESTER - Michael E. Dupre, 74, a longtime resident of Manchester, passed away peacefully on May 25, 2019, surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Schenectady, N.Y., on July 28, 1944, and raised in North Adams, Mass., he was the son of Ernest and Florence (Andrews) Dupre.

Michael earned his bachelor's degree from Saint Anselm College. In addition, he earned his master's and doctorate degrees from Boston College.

Before retiring in 2007, Michael had been a professor at Saint Anselm College for 38 years. He began teaching at Saint Anselm College in 1969 and within two years was named chair of the sociology department. He served as chair of the department for 21 years. As a reflection of his years of teaching and serving the Saint Anselm College community, in 2006 Michael was honored with the "Excellence in Faculty Accomplishment Award," which recognized him for ". . . excellence in teaching and scholarship, contributions to the academic community through active and positive relations with colleagues and students - and an involved concern for humanity. . ." Included in his busy life, Michael was also active and involved in New Hampshire politics.

He loved to travel and exercise; but, most importantly, to spend time with his family. His outside interests were so varied and many that he formed deep friendships including those with his "Friday Breakfast Club" at Chez Vachon, his lunch and poker pals, his Yoga and Pilates groups, his Pappy's friends, especially with Claudet and Joe and their New Hampshire exploration trips, and, of course, the many miles he ran with his dear jogging-buddy Dennis.

Michael loved trivia and doing handy-man work around the house, always willing to share his expertise with his children and anyone else who was brave enough to "try anything once and then call an expert." His family has so many wonderful memories and stories to cherish. His loss is immense; but, the love and laughter he brought to those who were fortunate enough to know him will forever be remembered.

His family would like to thank the physicians, nurses, and staff at both New Hampshire Oncology and Elliot Hospital for the incredible care offered Michael during his illness.

Family members include his wife of 54 years, Frances (Oparowski) Dupre of Manchester; his four beloved children, Michael and wife Jennifer of Manchester, Melinda and husband Jeffrey of Walkertown, N.C., Marc and girlfriend Melanie of Manchester, and Matthew of Apex, N.C.; his six treasured grandchildren, Nicholas, Ethan, Michael Joseph, Nathan, Mason and Leia; and his two special step-grandchildren, Taylor and Bradley. He also shared many happy times with his extended family, including his sister-in-law Joanne Haytaian and her children Ben and Jessie, and his sister-in-law Maryann St. John and her children Andy, Aaron, and Christie.

.

SERVICES: Calling hours are Friday, May 31, from 9 to 11 am. in Lambert Funeral Home & Crematory, 1799 Elm St., corner of North Street, Manchester.

A memorial mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Friday at 11:30 a.m. from St. Catherine of Siena Church, Hemlock Street, Manchester. A memorial luncheon will follow.

Memorial donations may be made to the New Hampshire Chapter of the American Cancer Society, 2 Commerce Drive, Suite 110, Bedford, N.H. 03110.

I am sorry to hear of Mike's passing, though glad he had friends and family close. I remember well when the AAUP chapter agreed to give him the Distinguished Faculty Award. Recognizing the pressures to publish faced by younger faculty, Mike decided "if they can do it, I can do it." Working with Dante Scala and others he created a wholly new research program. That commitment to colleagues, dedication to excellence, and willingness to try new things made Mike an ideal recipient. I did not know him well as a person (he retired just as I got tenure), but he always had a smile, a joke, and advice whenever I saw him. I'm sorry for your loss. Dupre Family--Over the years I had the pleasure of interacting with Mike from time to time during his workouts at Saint Anselm with Professor Sweetland. He was always wearing an infectious smile when he talked about his teaching days and even bigger when he spoke if his family. He never passed up a moment to tell a story about one of his children or an incident that took place while living next door to Adam Sandler.
His positivity was contagious and appreciated. He always made you feel like you were the center of the conversation and wanted to know how you were doing. May you all find comfort and support from family and friends around you. Thank you for sharing Mike with us.

To the Dupre Family, Please accept my sincere condolences on your loss of such a wonderful and vibrant man. I was a nursing student at St. A's who worked for Professor Dupre in the Sociology Department for three years and over the summers at St. A's and I had him for a professor a couple of times. I had the pleasure of typing that doctoral dissertation back in the days before computers existed and can chuckle about that now. He was always thoughtful, engaging with everyone he met and had such a great sense of humor. His children were all young then and I think Matthew was just two when I started working there and I felt like I knew them all because he talked about them so much. I have run into him in the grocery store and dentist over the years and it was always like the years had never passed when I saw him and he would catch up on life, his children and grandchildren and retirement. I can only imagine the lifetime of memories that all of you have to treasure of him. My thoughts are with all of you.

I am so very sorry to hear of Prof. Dupre's passing. As a nursing student at St. A's a few decades ago, I worked for him and his sociology department as my Work Study job for three of my years there. I will always remember his kindness and quick wit. You must have been very proud of him. My prayers are with all of you during this horribly difficult time.

Fran, please accept our deepest sympathies to you and the family. Mike was a tremendous member of the St. Anselm Faculty, an outstanding professor, a mentor, and a great friend to the Monier Family. Always upbeat and positive, he had a way of bringing people into a conversation. He was kind, considerate, and passionate about our nation & how we interact with others. He will be greatly missed, and I am saddened by the loss of his friendship and wise counsel. Our thoughts & prayers are with you and the family.

I am deeply sorry to hear of the passing of Mike Dupre. I was a sociology major and a student of his years ago (class of '94). I loved his classes because he had such a breadth of knowledge and enthusiasm for life. I learned so much from him academically. But more than that, Mike was always a champion for me on a personal level. He encouraged and supported me in my academic, career, and personal goals. Even years after I graduated, I would sometimes call him to check in or to seek his advice, and Mike was always ready to spend the time to do all that he could to help. I am so grateful for his generous mentorship. May he rest in peace. May he be with God. I am praying for him and for his family during this time of sorrow.

We were so surprised and saddened to read that Mike has died. He was a wonderful neighbor and always so vibrant. He was passionate about his family and his profession and I know you have many memories to cherish. My last with Mike was in the market and he'd forgotten his phone so I lent him mine so he could confirm his purchase. We had a good laugh and he had a great smile. Our deepest sympathy as you mourn him s loss and celebrate his life.
