Peter DelMastro Obituary

Peter F. DelMastro, 95, of Kittery, ME, formerly of Manchester, NH, passed away peacefully on June 4, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family.

Born on July 7, 1929, in Hartford, CT, he was the son of the late Antonio and Maria DelMastro. He graduated from Weaver High School in Hartford and, in the years that followed, lived in Washington, D.C., and Manchester, NH, before settling in Kittery, ME. He and his beloved wife, Phyllis, also enjoyed many winters together in Haines City and New Smyrna Beach, Florida, a cherished tradition filled with sunshine and companionship.

A proud veteran, Peter honorably served in the United States Navy during the Korean War. As a talented tenor saxophonist, clarinetist, and arranger with the United States Navy Band, he shared his gift for music in service to his country, an experience he carried with pride throughout his life. He was a longtime member of the American Legion Henry J. Sweeney Post #2.

Peter enjoyed a rewarding career in the insurance industry. He began with Hartford Fire Insurance in his hometown and retired as a property underwriter manager in Manchester, NH, in 1991. Known for his integrity, professionalism, and warm demeanor, he earned the respect and friendship of colleagues and clients alike.

Deeply devoted to his Catholic faith, Peter was an active parishioner of St. Pius X Church in Manchester, where he served on the parish council and as a Eucharistic minister. He was also a member of the Men of St. Joseph. After relocating to Kittery, he continued his faith journey as a member of St. Christopher Church.

Peter had a generous heart and a spirit of service. He gave freely of his time, volunteering with many organizations including St. Vincent de Paul, the Elliot Hospital, York Hospital, and even reading with children at Coastal Ridge Elementary School, an experience that brought him great joy in his later years.

Those who knew Peter will remember him as a true gentleman. He was kind, thoughtful, and quietly devoted to the people and causes he loved. His steady presence and warm smile left a lasting impact on everyone he met. Peter's legacy of faith, family, and quiet strength will live on in the hearts of those who loved him.

Family members include his beloved wife of seventy-three years, Phyllis (Chelelli) DelMastro of Kittery, ME; his daughter, Lynn DiElsi and her husband, Dan, of York, ME; his son, Peter DelMastro and his wife, Jo-Ann, of Salem; four cherished grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased this past year by his brothers, Umberto and Emilio DelMastro.

Services: A calling hour will be held Wednesday, June 18, 2025, from 9 to 10 AM at St. Pius X Church, 575 Candia Road, Manchester, NH.

The funeral will follow in the church with a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 10 AM.

Committal prayers with military honors will proceed in the mausoleum at Mount Calvary Cemetery, Manchester, NH.

Please omit flowers. Memorial donations may be made to American Legion Henry J. Sweeney Post #2, 251 Maple St., Manchester, NH 03103 or Kids Five and Over, P.O. BOX 171, Portsmouth, NH 03802.

I had the honor of working with Pete in the Hartford's Manchester, NH office. From the day I met him in 1980, we clicked because of his wonderful personality which mirrored that of my own Italian father right down to those smelly but great Italian stogies. We shared the beautiful traditions of our common upbringing. So happy to have known Pete. May he now rest peacefully with the Lord.
