I have known Stefan since 1957 when we both were freshmen at CCNY. We immediately became friends and saw each other frequently (double dates, etc). I was no brain in math and Steph likewise, was somewhat deficient in German. Steph often helped me with a horrible course called "Math 61" and I frequently assisted him in the German grammar.
Years later I was in France with my wife and young children; Steph was teaching a summer course in England; he hopscotched over to Paris and we spent several days together... Steph serving as our guide.
I have not seen Steph for approximately twenty years but we spoke via phone on a regular basis. Even on our last phone conversation, when he informed me of his liver disease, he referred to me as Dr. Von Braun, a name he has called me since he discovered my math "abilities" in the City College days. I will indeed miss my friend.

Steve was indeed a most distinguished colleague at Rivier College. Students often commented on his outstanding classes. He also was someone who faculty and staff enjoyed working with. The Greeks, who have words for everything, have a special prayer for times such as these: May the memory of our dearly departed Stefan, who is worthy of blessedness and eternal memory, be with us now and forever and ever. Dr. Charles L. Mitsakos (Retired Professor of Education at Rivier College)
