FREEDOM -- Wendell Howe Packard Sr., 100, died July 18, 2008, at his home.
He was born in Stoneham, Mass., June 4, 1908, to George Arthur and Hortense Dow Scott Packard. He graduated from Stoneham High School in 1927. He earned a bachelor's degree in engineering from Tufts College in 1931 and completed his MBA in 1939 at Boston University.
He was an avid skier.
In Freedom, he was a member of the Berry Bay Association and sampled Berry Bay for the UNH Lay Lake Monitoring Program (LLMP).
Mr. Packard celebrated his 100th birthday with family and friends on June 7, at which time he was awarded the NH Masonic Centenarian Plaque.
IN HIS LIFE: He married Elizabeth Turner Packard on Oct. 26, 1940. They had three children, Wendell H. Packard Jr. of Freedom, Anne Turner Packard of Holderness and Jean Elizabeth Rose of Rochester.
In 1942, he established Packard Machinery Company in Kendall Square, Cambridge, Mass. The company is now in Westford, Mass.
His grandchildren, Wendell H. Packard III, Amy Packard Bottomley, Heidi Packard, Amber Haskett, Elizabeth McKinney, Richard W. and Joseph MacHugh all loved "grandpa."
Wendell is also survived by eight great-grandchildren, Wendell IV and Nathan Packard, Carson and Turner Bottomley, Reagan MacHugh, Collin, Cameron and Chloe McKinney, three nephews, George Q Packard Jr., Scott Fredrickson, Roy D. Turner and two nieces, Linda T. Szymczak and Eleanor Turner.
A Mason for 65 years, he was a member of the Carroll Lodge # 57 of Freedom. He also was a member of the Ossipee Rotary Club.
While living in Reading, Mass., he served as a Town Meeting member and on the Finance Committee. He retired from the Stoneham Savings Bank Board of Investment in 1983.
SERVICES: Committal services will be Aug. 30 at 2:30 p.m. at Lake View Cemetery, Freedom. Memorial donations may be made to the Freedom Masonic Lodge #57, P.O. Box 32, Ossipee 03864 or to the First Christian Church of Freedom. P.O. Box 212, Freedom 03836.
Lord Funeral Home, Center Ossipee, assisted the family with arrangements.

Condolences to the family! I did not get to see Wendell and Elizabeth as much as my brother and sister in law from Canada but had a lot of letter writing regarding the geneology of the Hastings/Packard family.
