NASHUA -- William J. Smart, 68, a well-known business executive, died Sept. 1, 2010, at his home with his wife by his side after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.

He was born in Nashua, Dec. 5, 1941, to Richard J. and Mary A. (Hurley) Smart. He was educated in local schools and was a graduate of Nashua High School.

He had an outstanding career as a sales representative and then became sales staff manager with the Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. for more than 30 years, attaining multiple conference qualifications and setting numerous sales records in both Nashua and Bedford.

He took an early retirement from the insurance business and joined DAK Financial Services in Amherst, as an independent broker for four years until becoming co-owner of Smart & Breault Financial Services LLC of Nashua in 1999. He served as president and chief financial officer of the firm. He held membership in Nashua Life Underwriters, Metropolitan Veterans Association and the National Ethics Bureau.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing at Camp Ellis in Maine and loved being with family and friends.

He was predeceased by his wife first, Judy Smart, and a son, Greggory W. Smart.

IN HIS LIFE: Family members include his wife, Renee (Bouchard) Smart, with whom he shared six very happy years; two sons and their wives, Ricky and Sue Smart of Nashua and Dean and Brooke Smart of Barrington; a stepson, John Reardon and his wife Jennifer of Auburn; stepdaughters Stacie Street and her husband, Steve, of Londonderry, Kelley Blais and her husband, Jason, of Manchester; six grandchildren, Ashley Smart of Derry, William Gregory Smart of Barrington, Marc Reardon and Eric Reardon of Auburn, and Sam Street and Sullivan Street of Londonderry; three brothers and their wives, Scott Smart and Yvonne of Nashua, James Smart and Debbie of Manchester and Jeffrey Smart and Michelle of Florida; two sisters, Diane McAveeney and her husband, Paul, and Carrie Smart of Nashua; and numerous nieces and nephews.

SERVICES: Calling hours will be held at Farwell Funeral Home, 18 Lock St., Nashua; Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., followed by a funeral service at 12:30 p.m. Burial will take place at Forest Hill Cemetery in East Derry.

Donations may be made to The Dana-Farber Clinical Trial Center, 44 Binney St., Boston, MA, 02115.

Arrangements are in the care of Farwell Funeral Service.

My sympathy to your family. Your Dad was my insurance agent when he was with Metlife and when he left my business went with him. I knew him close to 30 years and he became a good friend. He was a very caring and wonderful man. I will miss him.
