Carol Nance Obituary

NORTH LEWISBURG – Carol Ann (Roth) Nance, 71, passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2025 in OSU Wexner Medical Center.

Carol was born on Sept. 15, 1954 in Columbus, Ohio, to the late Dr. Carl William and Fairy Carolyn (Rader) Roth.

She was a 1972 graduate of Whetstone High School in Columbus. She went on to attend The Ohio State University, where she studied Elementary Education, earning her Bachelor's Degree and later her Master's Degree in Counselor Education. While studying at OSU, she met the love of her life, John, in a speech class at Campbell Hall. The two were married on Dec. 17, 1976 at Maple Grove United Methodist Church in Columbus, Ohio.

Carol was a longtime member of Maple Grove United Methodist Church, where her faith was an important part of her life. She dedicated 37 years to teaching 4th and 5th graders at Triad Elementary School, leaving behind a lasting legacy of compassion, patience, and devotion to her students. She was also an active member of the Champaign County Retired Teachers Association, the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, and The Ohio State University Alumni Association.

In her free time, Carol enjoyed reading Amish novels, cheering for Ohio State basketball and football, vacationing in Fort Myers, Florida, shelling on Sanibel Island, and bird watching. Her life reflected a deep love of learning, a heartfelt appreciation for nature, and an enduring devotion to family, faith, and community.

For six consecutive years starting in 2013, Carol enjoyed traveling to New York City to watch her son Thomas, Float Captain, and her husband and son John, both Float Escorts, march in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade. It became a family tradition to have dinner at Rock Center Café and watch the ice skaters at Rockefeller Center. She loved going to Broadway shows such as "Beautiful," the Carole King Musical or "On Your Feet" the Gloria Estefan Story or her favorite, "The Phantom of the Opera." "We have to go see the 'Christmas Spectacular' starring the Radio City Rockettes," she would say. And to top off the week, it was a fabulous dinner at Tavern on the Green in Central Park.

The family would like to thank the kind nurses, doctors and staff at the Ohio State Wexner Medical Center and Memorial Hospital in Marysville, Ohio.

Carol is survived by her loving husband of 49 years, John Nance; sons, Thomas William Nance and John Michael Nance; brother, John (Diena) Roth; sisters, Susan (Alex) Filipp, Martha (Doug) Wiles; and four nieces, Larissa Filipp, Mary (Jimmy) Tomer-Byun, Hayley Roth, Shen Hua Roth.

Carol is preceded in death by her parents and brother, William Roth.

A gathering of family and friends will be held from 10 a.m.-noon on Thursday, Oct. 30, 2025 in FRESHWATER, MCDONALD & VERNON, North Lewisburg, Ohio.

Funeral service will follow at noon in the funeral home with Pastor Stephen Luzader officiating.
