MARTINEZ, CALIFORNIA - Jonathan Eugene Sumpter, 57, of Martinez, California passed away on Friday, December 3, 2021 in his home surrounded by his loving family after a long, courageous battle with lung cancer.
Jon was born February 7, 1964 in Springfield, Ohio. The third child of Robert and Patricia (Oler) Sumpter of Urbana, Ohio, he graduated from Urbana High School in 1982. Jon proudly served in the United States Navy in 1983 to 1986. He married Julie Gallego in 1984. He was a member of the Church of Christ. Jon retired from the US Postal Service in CA. He always had a smile on his face and loved listening to music, playing the drums, traveling, and visiting with family & friends.
Jon is survived by his mother; daughter, Jaymee Sumpter; son, Joshua Sumpter; ex-wife Julie (Gallego) Sumpter; grandson, Jonah Doi; brothers, James Sumpter, Joel (Rachel) Sumpter, John Temple; brother-in-law, Robin Smith; nieces, Sarah and Tarah Sumpter; nephew, Joe Helms, and special friends Doug Burbeck and Chip Hill.
He is preceded in death by his father; siblings, Jeffrey Sumpter and Janet Armstrong as well as sister-in-law, Tammy Sumpter.
A gathering of family and friends will be held from 1-2 p.m. on Sunday, December 19, 2021 in the VERNON FUNERAL HOME, Urbana, Ohio. Memorial service will follow at 2 p.m. with Minister David Myers officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Hospice services.
