URBANA - Merryl E. "Bud" Runyan, 85, of Urbana, Ohio passed away on Monday, November 30, 2020 in his residence.

Bud was born July 7, 1935 in Mechanicsburg, Ohio, the son of the late Merryl and Sarah (Halfhill) Runyan. He was a 1953 graduate of Urbana Local and then received his B.S. in Agricultural Education in 1958 from The Ohio State University. Bud married the love of his life, Ruth (Mapp) Runyan on December 21, 1955.

He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Urbana, Harmony Lodge # 8 F.& A.M., Champaign County Pork Council, and a lifetime member of the Ohio Education Association (OEA). He has received many awards throughout his lifetime, including the Rotary Farmer of the Year in 2010, FFA State Farmer, in 1953, American Farmer in 1956, the first in Champaign County, National Vocational Agriculture Teacher of the Year in 1980, Champaign County Pork Council Hall of Fame, Champaign County Cooperator of the Year in 1987, Pork Industry Excellence award from Ohio State Pork Council in 2001, Ohio Spotted Swine State Fair Hall of Fame in 1997.

He was a lifelong farmer and teacher, who enjoyed working with people of all ages while passing on his passion and knowledge for all things related to agriculture. As a 4-H and FFA advisor for over 40 years, he taught many people agriculture skills as well as other skills including leadership, public speaking, and parliamentary procedures. He also gave back to his community by creating and overseeing the Pork Barn. If you ever have eaten a pork wrap you can thank him. The money generated has and will continue to support Champaign County 4-H and FFA youth. His last endeavor was to create a meat shop on the family farm with his son. If not in the meat shop, he could be found mowing the grass or cheering on his favorite football and basketball team, The Ohio State University.

Bud is survived by his wife of 65 years, Ruth Runyan; his children Melissa (Bob) Vervinck, Mark (Linda) Runyan; his grandchildren Myer Runyan, Emmy Runyan, Gretchen Imel, Grace Imel, Collin Vervinck, Matthew Vervinck; his brother David (Jane) Runyan; as well as 2 nieces.

Private family services will be held at the family's convenience. Masonic Honors will be provided by Harmony Lodge #8 F.& A.M. Burial will take place in Oakdale Cemetery, Urbana.

A celebration of his life will be held July 4, 2021 on the family farm, Oakview Farm.
