HERSHEY, Pa. - Ruby R. Stinson, 75, of Lakeland, FL, and formerly of Urbana, OH, passed away on August 22, 2016 at the Hershey Medical Center, surrounded by her family. Born September 16, 1940 in Urbana, OH, she was the daughter of the late Riley and Betty (Barger) Roush.
Surviving are husband, William S. Stinson, Jr. of Lakeland, FL, a son, two daughters, their spouses, and three grandchildren, William III, Elizabeth (Mello), Audrey, Drew, and Miriam Stinson of Hershey, Christine (Stinson) and Simon Hanstad of Pittsburgh, and Mary Stinson of Lakeland, FL. She is also survived by two brothers and two sisters and their spouses, James and Loretta Roush of Indianapolis, IN, Tom and Sue Roush of St. Paris, OH, Susie (Roush) Delewese of Powell, OH, Kimberly (Roush) and James Steiner of Springfield, OH.
She was a member of the first graduating class (1958) of Graham High School, St. Paris, where she was a cheerleader and homecoming queen. She was active in 4H and served as a camp advisor. She attended Urbana Junior College for two years and then transferred to The Ohio State University, majoring in Mathematics. She taught English and mathematics, in Canal Winchester, OH, Upper Arlington, OH, and Nyack, NY school districts. She tutored in the Cherry Hill, NJ and Derry Township, PA school districts and later volunteered as a museum docent at the Hershey Museum and Polk County Art Museum.
Ruby was very active in the communities where she lived, helping to found the League of Women Voters (LWV) of Clermont County, OH, where she was past president. She was also past president of both the LWV of Hershey, PA and the LWV of Polk County, FL, where she chaired many study committees focusing on education. She was a frequent attendee and participant of the Polk County Commissioners and School Board meetings.
An avid reader, Ruby was one of the founding members of a local Hershey book group, which is still active after 25 years. She was also a member of the WWW Book Group in Lakeland, FL. She was passionate about quilting and needlework, having designed and stitched over 100 quilts and wall hangings, many of which were award winning, over the course of her life.
Ruby had recently moved back to Hershey, PA, to be near her grandchildren, whom she loved dearly.
A memorial service was held on Friday, August 26, 2016 at 4:30 p.m. in the HOOVER FUNERAL HOME & CREMATORY, INC., Hershey, PA.
