Anthony D'Agostino Obituary

Anthony D'Agostino
Clinton, New York
Anthony "Nemo" R. D'Agostino died on November 9, 2011. He was born in Utica, NY, on December 5, 1916, the son of the late Lucia Scala D'Agostino and Anthony D'Agostino. Nemo was educated in local schools and graduated from Hamilton College. He was an accomplished speed skater and soccer player in his youth. During World War II, Nemo was a navigator and radar engineer in the US Army Air Force, where he proudly served along with two of his brothers. He flew in a B-24 bomber in the European Theater and subsequently was shot down over Poland on a mission in December of 1944. He was awarded the Purple Heart as a result of the injuries he suffered. Nemo returned to the Utica area after the war and became a well known housing developer and contractor. He particularly enjoyed constructing golf courses. In 1966, Nemo married the former Muriel Knapp, who shared his interests in travel and golf. They had many years of love and happiness until her death in 2005. Nemo and Muriel held Hamilton College very close to their hearts and attended many presentations and alumni events throughout their lives. The Fort Schuyler Club, Yahnundasis Golf Club and Royal Dornoch Golf Club (in Scotland) were among his favorite places. In addition to his beloved wife, Muriel, Nemo was predeceased by his parents, Anthony and Lucia D'Agostino; his brothers and their wives, Joseph and Barbara D'Agostino, James and Nora D'Agostino, and Louis and Margaret D'Agostino; and his sister and her husband, Katherine D'Agostino Hughes and Michael Hughes. He is survived by many nieces and nephews, several cousins, and many friends. In accordance with his wishes, there will be no calling hours. A memorial service celebrating Nemo's life will be held on Saturday, December 10, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. in the Hamilton College Chapel, Clinton. Arangements are with The Matt Funeral Home, Utica.
