UTICA - Douglas P. Zieman, 89, of Utica, passed away Thursday, May 18, 2017, at his home.
"Duke" was born June 23, 1927, in Utica, the son of Clarence and Marjorie (Powers) Zieman. He was raised and educated locally, graduating from UFA, and then earned his Bachelor's degree in civil engineering from Clarkson. He served his country with the US Army during World War II. He was employed with the architectural firm Egbert Bagg Associates of Utica. Two of the projects were the construction of St. Luke's Hospital and Utica College. He later bartended at the Fireside Inn. Doug was an outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing and camping in the Adirondacks, especially around Big Moose. His artistic nature led him to silversmithing, writing poetry, and calligraphy. He also played bugle for the Citizens Corps Cadets. Doug was of the Catholic faith and very proud of his Irish heritage.
Douglas is survived by his brother, John G. Ziemann, Remsen, NY ("Ace"); two nieces and nephews-in-law, Jill and Frank Bergmann, New Hartford, and Beth and Steven Bidstrup, Slingerlands; great-nieces and great-nephews, Bettina, Nicolas, Emily Jean, Erik and Devin; and one great-great-niece, Riley Rose. He was predeceased by his sister-in-law, Jean Ziemann, and by his nephew, Timothy Ziemann.
A memorial service will be held for Mr. Zieman on Friday, June 2, 2017, at 3 p.m. at the Heintz Funeral Home, 408 Herkimer Rd., North Utica. Interment in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Whitestown, will take place at the convenience of the family. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home Friday afternoon from 2-3 p.m., prior to the service.
