I worked for you when I was in my high school years (during 1970s) doing odd-jobs when you and Ellen lived on Emerson Ave. You always rewarded hardwork and honesty. Later in life, I worked in City Hall when you were Mayor and help put your ideas into motion at the beautiful Hanna Park. You were a great statesman and loving father to you wife and children. May God Bless Yoo always.

I am deeply saddened to learn of the loss of our beloved Mayor Ed Hanna.

My family and I just celebrated my fathers' 70th birthday in New Hartford, NY at Danieles. In my dad remarks, he expressed his condolences for the loss of Mayor Ed Hanna. He mentioned how Mayor Hanna was gracious in supporting his work with providing Christmas Parties every year for the less fortunate, and that one year, Mayor Hanna gave them the Utica Auditorium to do the party, and they were able to bring Christmas and gifts to over 1300 children in the City of Utica.

I personally remember Hanna Park where we roller-skated, ate salt potatoes with hot dogs and a drink at a price that everyone could afford, and eating crepes.

He was a great Mayor.

Dear Mayor Hanna....in May of 1974 my Father marched me ( I was 18) into your office to ask for a summer job.....I was scared to death until I saw you behind your desk in your office eating oreo cookies and milk. You heard my plea and gave me a job. You were a great inspiration to me and I will never forget you...ever.

Dear Ellen:
I grew up on Kenyon Ct. and visited often your father who was a Lt. on UFD's #9 Engine. He was a great man and I will always remember him. As a kid in the neighborhood, my friends also would see your husband around his candy factory on Hampton Pl.and he always had a sample to hand out. When I got older, I was a member of the UFD and thru your father your husband promoted me to provisional Lt. I will always remember them. My wife and I extend our deepest sympathies to you.

I first met Ed and his brothers at the Hathaway Bakery Building on Conkling Ave. Then in the early '60s I played in bands with Ed's nephew Jimmy. Later during his first administration, Ed hired me to do the Plumbing for the City.

I found him to be an extremely honest and generous man, always with the best interests of the City and it's people at heart.

I'm sure there will be empty places created in many people's lives as a result of Ed's departing. Fortunately there is much of his legacy that remains a testament of his live here in Utica.

I lived around the corner from Ed and his family , my dad owned Albert's tailoring his was a great customer of my dads. We used an empty lot across from Hartnick's food store on Butterfield Ave. That was owned by the railroad. They came one day and told us we could no longer use it.His son Ed just started playing with us and we went to see his father and told him what had happened. He called the railroad and wonted to buy the lot. But I don't really remeber if he brought it but we were able to keep playing baseball and he even had a fence co. ereck a fence for a back stop. He was one of a kind we'll miss him dearly. My condolences to the family.

He was a good man and as I look back, I am now 36 I remember going to Hanna Park for lunch, the park always looked nice. The city was lucky to have a person in that job that treated more than a job.

As I was reading some of the tributes left by many I was moved by how wonderful a person Mayor Hanna was. I already thought that in my heart because of how he personally touched our lives in the 70's. Here is my story. When he was elected Mayor of Utica in the 70's he had an "open door policy", I believe he actually took the door off of his office for a short time. I can attest that he was a man of his word. In 1976 we were a struggling young married couple with a child and my husband needed a job. I went to see Mayor Hanna. He gave me a letter stating when he was released from the Army he would have a job waiting for him. The day came when my husband showed up at City Hall, letter in hand, and Mayor Hanna hired him for the Parks Department. Later he transfered to the DPW where he worked for 5 years. Mayor Hanna was a unique individual who was loved by many. He made a personal impact to our lives and we will always remember him for that and the many wonderful things he did for the City of Utica.

Dear Hanna family, Just a little note to let you know that you and Mayor Hanna are in my prayers. Utica never looked so good as when he was our Mayor. Our streets were cleaner, our parks were beautiful and the people of Utica had something to be proud of. Even downtown was starting to look realy great. I know that in time with his attention it would have continued to grow and prosper. He had a vision and I wish he were still with us to make this vision come to fruition. God bless all of you . You will be in my prayers and thoughts.

My sincere sympathy to the Hanna family. Mayor Hanna did more for the city of Utica than any mayor in the country. He made the people proud and embrace this city more than ever. His overwhelming generosity, and dedication will be remembered forever. He was unselfish and a great role model to the people of the Utica. No one in history will leave the legacy that he did in our little city. He was like the grandfather of Utica and memories of the good old Hanna Park days with salt potatos, beautiful flowers and entertainment I will hold close to my heart forever. Dear Mayor Hanna you can rest knowing that you made a deep positive impression on all who knew you. We adored you and will hold you close to our hearts forever.

My hearfelt sympathies to Mrs. Hanna and the Mayor's family. He truly had a passion for the city, and cared for all its residents and those in our area.

I have great memories of attending countless concerts and shows at Hanna Park growing up and enjoying those famous hot dog and salt potatoes for supper. It was always like one big family reunion thanks to Mayor Hanna.

I'll never forget when he was Mayor a second time and I spoke briefly to him at an intermission at the park. Looking out at the huge crowd he said, "Isn't this great? He was so proud. Thanks, Mr. Hanna. Rest in peace.

When I think of Mayor Hanna, I'm always reminded of my Grandparents. Mayor Hanna was a neighbor to my Grandparents on Emerson Ave. One fond memory, was as a young child going to his house on Halloween. I don't know what year it was, but, I think I was in elementary school. My siblings and I went to his house. We were invited in. I remember this beautiful living room w/ a large dark table full of so much candy. There were people standing behind it. I was so nervous, I took the first piece I could reach. Mayor Hanna said, "That's it, help yourself to another piece." So, I took a second piece of the same candy, because of just I felt embarrassed and was looking to get out of "there" real quick. My Grandparents were Charles and Dorothy Hauf. I remember her calling on him the phone, and talking to him on a first name basics. Through the years, when ever the subject arose about Mayor Hanna, I would always tell or think this story. He seemed like a very nice man. He was like one of my personal "living connectors" to my Grandparents after they both passed away. When I think of him, I think of them. My condolences are sincerely expressed to his family. God Bless.

My sympathy to Ellen Hanna, the Hanna family and all of Ed Hanna's many friends. He will always be remembered for his independence and his determination to do what he truly believed was best for Utica, and has left a wonderful legacy in all the parks he created for Uticans to enjoy for years to come.

Larry Trivieri Jr

March 15, 2009

Mayor Hanna's life and life's work can be summed up in two words: He cared. There is no greater legacy. He was far and away Utica's best mayor and during his tenures there was far more pride in and hope for Utica among the majority of we who live here than at any other time. Ed made it easy to believe in possibility and Utica will never see his kind again. I hope he knew how greatly he was appreciated and that his wife and family know it too.

I am reminded of Ed everyday in Utica when I visit the Boys and Girls Club and the Senior Center Headquarters on the parkway, at Nurses Park, at the Adirondak Building, Hanna Parks, both Ellen and Ed, and at Liberty Park. I think of him when I dine or stop by for a drink at the Hotel Utica or even at the Raddison which was made possible from the original plan and clearance for La Prominade. Ed comes back to me when I look at the leader board at the Valley View golf course or when I stop by at the peaceful setting of the Erie Canalside restaurant. I check my time for my downtown appointments at the clock tower across from the savings bank and think of Ed when I listen to the chimes from the Tower of Hope. These are just some of his works that I can quickly remember off hand.
There are many more tangible reminders of Ed Hanna but the most profound keepsakess are the memories of his friendliness, his decisiveness, his entertaining debate style, and his ability to get things done. When he was mayor, there was an extra spring in everyone's step when they walked downtown and became aware of each new change that he had fashioned; and, there was a bigger smile on their face thinking of the feathers he had ruffled to get most of them done.
More than most, he is an historical figure for the ages in our town.

Ed Hanna's enthusiasm and endless energy from his first victory for mayor in 1973 proved to be a boost to the Utica area during those difficult times of the nation's energy crisis, recession, Vietnam and Watergate. Vietnam would end during his first term (April 1975). I recall vividly his re-election bid that same year during my sophomore year at Thomas R. Proctor High School -- me and my twin and our friends campaigned for him. That experience set us on a path to be actively involved in politics and participate in our community. Mayor Hanna impacted the lives of many people -- for the better. His innovative, creative and caring ways are needed in today's world. His selfless generosity in giving hundreds of thousands of dollars to local organizations show his love of humanity. Peace to his loving and devoted wife, Ellen, and the Hanna family.

Ed Hanna was a visionary and a good man who did great things for Utica and who always wanted to do so much more. May he rest in peace and may his family take comfort in the fact that he was appreciated and respected by most Uticans.

My (now ex) wife and I got married in 1999 while he was still mayor. After my mother in law surprised us with a small reception at the Radisson, we happened to see Mayor Hanna having a business meeting. Not one to be shy, my ex's aunt went up to him and asked him to join us for a piece of wedding cake. In that one time that I met him, he was very gracious to interrupt the lunch meeting he was having to come over and congratulate us. That is something I will never forget.

Mr. Hanna was a great man! Fantastic Mayor, Brilliant Businessman and a very compassionate man. Mr. Hanna had a lot of great ideas and drive. He really changed the direction of Utica twice. He had a rope plant in Waterville and made millions with Kodak, as he had patents to the Passport photo booth machine.

I was very close to Ed. His life was filled with alot of ups and downs when it came to being the Mayor. The most joy he had in life was doing things for the people of Utica. He was a business man and ran the city like it was a business. The common tax paying citizen with no political ties ment the most to him. I learned a lot from Ed and Ellen. I loved him and will never let his name and what he did fade away. I also would like to say thank you to Mark K. for helping him and Ellen.

It is great sorry that we have in our hearts in learning of the death of our friend, Ed Hanna. Ed was not only a dynamic, larger than life figure, but to us that knew him, a caring, generous man who held out a helping hand to anyone in need. Ed loved the City of Utica to a fault. He loved his wonderful wife, Ellen, and his family. Our hearts go out to his family, and let them know, we, along with our family, and the citizens of the area, will sorely miss Ed Hanna.

I didn't know Mayor Hanna as a PERSONAL acquaintance but by seeing how passionate he was for
his city & all he did to make Utica a
better place for all of us, I felt I knew him in a sense.
Utica should be proud; therefore, he,
as well as his family, friends; are in my familys' prayers & thoughts.
May god bless Mayor Hanna in paradise.

DEAR ELLEN,

READING ALL THESE MESSAGES JUST BRINGS MORE TEARS AS THEY BRINGS HOME ONCE AGAIN, WHAT A GREAT GUY YOUR HUSBAND REALLY WAS. I ADMIRED HIM AND POINTED OUT TO MY GROWING SONS THE VALUES OF HIS MANNER OF CONDUCTING BUSINESS BOTH AT CITY HALL AND IN WATERVILLE. WHAT HE INVISIONED AND DID FOR UTICA NO ONE SINCE HAS EVEN COME CLOSE TO!!! AND I REMEMBER SEEING THE TWO OF YOU FREQUENTLY AT THE VERNON DINER ON SUNDAY'S; YOU AND MAYOR HANNA ALWAYS HAD TIME TO SAY HELLO AND ASK HOW I WAS AND HOW THE "BOYS" WERE. THANK YOU ELLEN. GOD BLESS YOU. GOD BLESSED UTICA WHEN HE GAVE UTICA MAYOR HANNA. MAY "THE PEOPLE'S MAYOR" NOW REST IN PEACE. HE DID THE JOB, AND HE DID IT RIGHT.

Mayor Hanna taught us how important it is to have eyes that can see what needs to be done and a heart that cares, and to keep on moving forward, every step of the way, without ever stopping.

Mayor Hanna was a ray of sunshine in my mother (Louise Ryan's eyes). He led Utica for many years and we have fond memories of him.

I went to his open, informal town meetings he use to hold. The place was packed with the common folks that make things work. He would speak from his heart for hours with his good common sense approach to goverment, with out telepromters. David Reynolds, former Utica, resident

Ed was my beautiful, late Mother's cousin. I met him on a few of our annual family treks to Utica for Summer vacation. I can't speak to his political accomplishments, but I know what a warm and loving family he came from - that tells me well enough what 'good people' he was. Rest in peace, cousin Ed. And give my Mom, Aunts and Uncles a big warm hug and kiss from me.
