Enid Savett Obituary

Enid H. Savett
New Hartford
Enid H. Savett, 71, died December 28, 2012, at home, after an eight-month illness. She was a retired nurse. Enid was born in Tupper Lake, NY, on June 23, 1941, and her family moved back to Utica in 1945. She attended Kemble and John F. Hughes grammar schools, graduated Utica Free Academy in 1959, started nursing school, then moved to Minneapolis where she was an operating room technician. She returned to Utica in 1964, where she continued work as an operating room technician and nurse at St. Lukes Memorial Hospital Center. During this time she completed her RN training and received an associate degree at Mohawk Valley Community College. She completed over 20 years in the US Army, active duty and reserve, including a long career as a personnel counselor recruiting physicians and other health care professionals for the Army Medical Department. Her leadership qualities were recognized and she rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel by the time she left the military in 1994. On return to Utica, she continued her nursing career at Oneida Correctional Facility in Rome, NY, retiring in 2005. She was an active curler, a long-standing member of the Utica Curling Club and national curling associations, and she officiated at many local, regional, national and world curling events. She was a lifetime member of Temple Beth El, serving on its Board and in other volunteer positions. She took pride in her nursing and military careers, in her curling activities, in her Temple work, and in her family. She was predeceased by her father and mother, Harry and Eleanor Savett, life-long Uticans; and by her grandparents, Bertha and Wolf Landsman and Sam and Jennie Zavotsky. She is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Laurence and Susanne Savett, St. Paul, MN; her niece, Ellen Savett, Zurich, Switzerland; and her nephew and his wife, Rabbi Jonathan and Lauren Spira-Savett and their children, Alex, Lela, and Sarinah, Nashua, NH. Enids funeral will be held Sunday (today) at 12 noon at Temple Beth El, 2710 Genesee St., Utica. The family will receive visitors at her home, 3 Wills Drive, New Hartford, Sunday through Wednesday, and shiva services will be held there on those days at 7 pm. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Enids memory are suggested to Temple Beth El, Utica Curling Club, Spring Farm Cares, or the contributors choice. Arrangements are with the Bentz & Amodio Funeral Service, Inc.,315-724-2731. Online condolences to www.bentzamodio.com

Eydie has been a beloved fixture in the competetive curling world for so many years. She officiated those games with a gruff voice and a heart of gold. Her passing was announced at the Junior Championships in Maryland, leaving many young curlers deeply shaken and sad. She will be dearly missed.
The Eastern regional organization, Grand National Curling Club, has created the annual GNCC Junior Spirit of Curling Award, dedicated to the memory of Eydie Savett, to be awarded to one men's and one women's team competing in the GNCC Junior Championships, beginning next season. It is the very least we can to to commemorate her hard work and dedication.
Eydie, you and I were long acquainted and recently friends. I will miss sharing events with you. Rest in Peace.

Larry and family,
My deepest sympathy on your loss. Enid and I go back many years from our days at Temple Beth El religious school starting in 6th grade or so and through high school. The last I saw her was probably in the 1960's as my parents were still alive and living on Sunset Ave. (They died in '73 and '75 respectively). I am happy to see she did pursue a nursing career and did so well in the military. She was always interested in helping others. I am only saddened that she passed away so "young." Please accept my sincerest condolences. May memories comfort you and your family at this difficult time. Judy Wineburg Melamed

Our dearest Larry and Sue and beautiful family, as we were reading the obituary it was so apparent that Enid was a individual that believed in giving back her kindness and knowledge of her background to others. We are not surprised because that is the true Savett/Misel family description of how you all treat others. With dignity and love always. To give strength and love to others in good times as well as challenging times....that's what makes for a special family, and that you are. Larry and Sue, Enid was blessed with your love and support and to know that her strength as well to try to extend her life was a brave move on her part. We extend our love and comfort from afar yet you are always close to our hearts in the Bloom family.

Larry, Sue and family. I am so sorry for your loss. I truly enjoyed the time that I spent with Enid, I only wish that I had met her under different circumstances. For Christmas she gave me the most beautiful gift, a glass bulb with an Angel that is illuminated. I will always treasure that gift. I truly admired her bravery and also how she would get up at the crack of dawn and we would start the chores. The first time I baked a cake at 6 AM...I will miss you "My Friend".

Dear Larry,
My heart goes out to you. Enid lived a good life and served her country as an Army nurse. Take comfort in knowing she comforted a lot of injured and sick people. --Paula
