A great teacher and a great person. I would say his greatest gift in teaching was not so much the knowledge he would impart to others although he had a great deal of knowledge, but rather his unique gift in pushing his students to think carefully and vigorously about what they have read and to say something worthwhile about it both in discussion or in written form - and making it fun along the way. And somehow imparting the sense that if you did not do it as well as you could have, that you should try again and do it better.

Fred challenged and inspired me and I will always be grateful for the opportunity I had to study with him. I loved him and miss him, and will think of him fondly and often.

The memories of Fred's hearty laugh and beautiful smile remain. We share in the grief of his friends and family and hope all find comfort as we look at the life Fred lived and all he shared of himself through his writing, through teaching and through friendship.
