Gregory Kabot Obituary

Gregory F. Kabot 1934 - 2021
UTICA - The family of Gregory "Greg" F. Kabot, is saddened in announcing his passing on August 5, 2021, after a lengthy and courageous fight with cancer. He was 86. Greg leaves behind a loving family, who will remember him in generations to come, for both his unconditional kindness and the good-natured spirit he embodied throughout his life.
He is survived by his devoted and loving wife of 50 years, Josephine M. Kabot (Ferucci), of Utica; stepson and daughter, James Castronova, Jr., of Upper Darby, PA and Elizabeth Kooyman, of Oneonta, NY; additionally, Greg leaves behind three grandchildren, Magen Ann Brenner, Christopher Castronova and SGT Jason Castronova; along with two great-granddaughters, Riley Sophia Castronova and Vivian Brenner. He is survived by his brother, Edward Kabot, of New Hartford; his sisters-in-law, Rosemary Kabot, of Utica, wife to his late brother, John Kabot and their son, nephew, John Kabot Jr., and Lorraine Kabot, of Clinton, wife of his late brother, Joseph. The list of nieces and nephews and immediate family, unnamed, who knew him as Uncle Greg, is too numerous to mention, but, he was loved by them all.
Born October 4, 1934, in Utica, Greg was the youngest of four sons and attended UFA, before enlisting in the Navy, in 1949, at 17. His military career spanned over 40 years of active and reserve duty in three of the four military branches of service, ending in 2007, when he retired from the Army Reserve, as Sergeant First Class. He was a Desert Storm Veteran and served with the 414th Civil Affairs Det in Kuwait; while deployed, being awarded both The Kuwait Liberation and Southwest Asia Service Medals. Greg worked throughout the 60's and 70's locally for Univac Corp., where he met his future wife, Josephine. They married in 1971. In 1977, Greg re-joined the Army Reserve, where he remained in a full-time position as a Property Books Officer and Facility Supply Sergeant, until his retirement in 2007. His passion for golfing was immense and he was a regular at many of the local courses in the area, participating in league play and tournaments, seasonally, up until 2016, when his illness made it too difficult to continue playing other than an occasional round. He loved reading history and listening to sports on the radio as a pastime. Greg was a lifelong Yankees fan and always quick to throw his insights into discussion on how his team was performing, to anyone who displayed an interest.
Relatives and friends may call on Thursday, August 12, 2021, from 5 to 7 p.m., at The Matt Funeral Home, 700 Rutger St., in Utica. Entombment services with Military Honors will be held on Friday, at 10:30 a.m., at the upper mausoleum at Calvary Cemetery.

It was so nice running into Uncle Greg, he always has a smile on his face, and a story to tell. Even as a child I was so excited to go to my grandparents house because I knew uncle Greg would be there to play a silly game with us and make us laugh.
