Joan D. Burns
Utica
Joan D. Burns, 87, of Utica, and formerly of Chesapeake, VA, died on Thursday, February 26, 2009, at Faxton-St. Lukes Healthcare. She was born on October 29, 1921, in Utica, the daughter of the late David and Ruth (Kaufer) Wurz. She graduated from Whitesboro High School. On July 3, 1950, she married Thomas W. Burns in Utica. Tom preceded her in death on February 7, 2001. Mrs. Burns was a member of St. Christophers Episcopal Church in Chesapeake, VA. In her free time she enjoyed following the stock market and watching sports, specifically the Washington Red Skins and the Chicago Cubs and US Tennis. She is survived by in-laws, Helen and Tom Burke of Deerfield, NY, and Josephine Burns of Utica, NY; nieces and nephews, Tom Burke, Jr. of Colorado, Kevin Burke of Vermont, Deborah Burke of Utica, NY, Diane Marchese of Cicero, NY, John Burke of Texas, Laurie Rudnick of East Syracuse, NY, Sue Burns of Durhamville, NY, Jean Burns of Oriskany, NY, Robert Burns of Minnesota, Michele Stanik of Fulton, NY, Kathy Siver of Cicero, NY; a very special friend, Barbara Dorsey of Chesapeake, VA, and several great-nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the Masonic Care Community for the excellent care and companionship they offered Joan; especially the staff of the Amherst Neighborhood who worked with her and made her feel like family. In addition, they would also like to thank her niece, Deborah Burke for all the support and care she provide to Joan over the last several months. The funeral will be held Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at the Dimbleby, Friedel, Williams & Edmunds Funeral Home, Forty Main St., Whitesboro. Interment will be in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens, Suffolk, VA, at the convenience of the family. Calling hours will be from 1:00 to 2:00 on Sunday, prior to the funeral service. Friends may consider the Masonic Care Community in her memory. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home. Please omit flowers.
