I wanted to extend my sympathy to your family. I shared many a day with Joe, as we worked together for many years at NIMo. Working at Rome sub and the other substations were some of the best days we shared there. He always made work fun. He was a good man and will be missed by many. Hutch

Joe, Jeff & Jason,
Hearing the news of your Dad's passing has flooded me with many memories of my favorite Deerfield family! As a young girl meeting him I was taken back and shy, but that soon left as he always made me feel welcome and always took the time to talk. In his own way it was made obvious how much his family meant to him. My thoughts and prayers are with you all!

One of my best friends in grade and high school was Judy Spilka and that is how I met Joe and Bob. My friends and I spent many an evening at the Spilka residence playing cards, listening to music and eating pizzas. Big Joe was always teasing us about how we should pay rent because we were there so very, very often. The Spilka family was one of the nicest families in West Utica and I shall never forget Big Joe making fun of the way I talked. He said I sounded like Snaggle Puss. May you rest in peace, quiet and unassuming Joe.

Big Joe was one of my best friends ever since grammar school. He always had a great sense of humor and was a gracious host at the camp on First Lake in the Adirondacks during Winter Carnivals in the '50s & '60s, during the summers for waterskiing, and more recently for our reunions at the camp of Seventh Lake. Joe sure knew how to put on a feast for his buddies. Big Joe will be greatly missed by everyone.
