Neval Abounader Obituary
Utica
Neval G. Abounader, 92, of Utica passed away Tuesday, August 18, 2009 at Loretto Utica Center. Neval was born on January 24, 1917 in Utica the son of Namtallah and Mary (Samaha) Abounader. He served in the South Pacific including Pearl Harbor during WWII as a member of the U.S. Army Air Corps. Neval was a renowned member of the ink-stained society as an accomplished songwriter, writing under the pseudonym Neval Nader, for artists including Gene Pitney, The Fleetwoods, Bobby Vee, Bobby Vinton, and Andy Williams. Additionally, Neval wrote poetry, plays and books both published and unpublished. His pastels were marketed under the name Screwloose LaTrec. His humor and insight were central to his nature. A very popular and prolific writer of letters to the editor for the NY Daily News, the Las Vegas Sun, and the Utica OD, he was a man of strong beliefs, a patriot filled by passion and compassion who lived life on his own terms. Whether Neval lived in a 5th Avenue Penthouse, a Times Square Apartment, Las Vegas, or returning home in the early 80s, he remained true to himself and his convictions. Surviving are his sister, Anna A. Cafarelli, Utica; brother-in-law, Harry Abess, Endwell, NY; nieces, nephews, their spouses and families including Joyce Duignan and her husband, Michael, David Cafarelli, Steven Cafarelli, Elayne Luis, Norman Abess, Ronald Abess, Jeffrey Joseph, Cheryl Youngman, Michael and Marie Berman. He was predeceased by siblings, Selma Karam, Lucy Abounader, Louis Abounader, Louise Berman, her husband Naaman, his twin sister, Ada Joseph, her husband John, Lucy Abess, and a special brother-in-law, Dominick Cafarelli. Funeral services will be at the convenience of the family under the direction of Nunn & McGrath Funeral Directors, 470 French Rd., Utica. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery.
