Just found out about this as Dan was a teammate of my HS coach at Ohio University and a coach to me at Miami of Ohio in the late 70's. Dan made college distance running bearable for me. I will never forget him driving his old (I think it was a Dodge) around our course timing and yelling encouragement. He had painted that car with a rattle can and then drove it before it dried so it had a "zebra" look to at as the wind made the paint job uneven. Great man, funny and super nice.

I had the good fortune of being coached by Dan in my Miami days ('79 grad) He was a great Hall of Fame Coach but he was even a better man. We were all lucky to cross paths with Coach and we'll all miss his big smile, booming voice and optimistic outlook towards everything. The man just always had a smile. Coach, from your Miami University track family...Love + Honor!

I was a childhood friend of Dan's sister Kathy but we lost touch years ago. I remember fondly the times spent at the Stimson home. My prayers and a wish for peace go out to the family.

Dan travelled 6 hours in torrential rains in 2012 to recruit my son Sam. On crutches and wet to the bone he sat down and enchanted us with his charm and countless stories. From that moment on I became a fan and a friend. I wish I knew him before I left W&M in 1985. The void that Dan leaves is not possible to fill. He was unique in his care, dedication, knowledge and character. I am so glad I drove down a couple of months ago to visit him and share some stories. For 4 hours he didnt take a breath as he rolled from in tale to the next. Great coach but a greater man.

I had the pleasure of working with Dan for many years and while doing so I was able to enjoy what a wonderful and kind person he was. Always had a smile on his face and he always had the most positive attitude about his passion, Track and Field and especially the Shot Put. This man was also a very big family man who loved them with all of his heart. We often talked about Rosemary and Clare (especially since he was in the same class as my daughter and knew each other). Dan was a very active man in the church, too. May God give his family and close friends the strength in these such sad times. Men like Dan Stimson are few and far between and he will be sorely missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him both as a coach and a friend like myself.

We have only good memories of Dan and the time we were able to spend with him, mostly at Beal Family Reunions. Everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him is aware of that wonderful smile and his upbeat personality. He was so generous - even spent time teaching our daughter to throw a shot put during a reunion! We are thinking of you all. Love, Andrea, Tim, Katie, Bryan, Michael, Ashleigh, Karen, Collin and Becca.

We have lost a wonderful man!! I will always remember my time with Coach at Miami of Ohio. He was a great mentor, friend, and wonderful individual. Always thought the world of him. His infectious personality and the love for what he did and the people that he did it with was something that I will never forget. Those of us who had the good fortune to cross paths with Dan were the luck ones!! All my best to Rosemary and the family during this difficult time. Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you.
