Genevieve Chis Obituary

Genevieve L. Chis (Gene) 1-2-1925 – 5-16-2021 A beautiful, intelligent young woman met a handsome, intelligent young man from a nearby coal mining town in Pennsylvania. The young woman, Gene, followed her love Al around the world while he flew for the Air Force through three wars as part of the greatest generation. From Japan to Alaska (before statehood) with four children in tow, Gene and Al moved every three years before building their dream home in Williamsburg, VA in 1965. In 1973 they finally settled there and she remained until 2015. Williamsburg allowed Gene the chance to flourish and follow her artistic passions in earnest. First in floral design with the Dogwood Garden Club of Queens Lake, then continuing to the highest level as a nationally accredited Master Flower Show Judge. She continued her artistic pursuits as an award-winning collage artist and served for many years as the president of This Century Art Gallery, now known as Williamsburg Contemporary Art Center. Gene's love of Asian design was evident in both her arrangements and her collages. Gene was predeceased by her husband Al (Colonel Alexander R. Chis) who was buried in Arlington National Cemetery in 1991 under the headstone Gene lovingly designed for him. She will be joining him there at long last. Gene is survived by her children Alexander J. Chis (Claudette Begin) of Union City, CA, Suzanne T. Chis of Alexandria, VA, Barbara C. Ingram (Brian) of Cobbs Creek, VA and Marianne C. Hunley of Mathews, VA. Grandchildren Matthew B. Ingram (Taryn White) of Washington, DC, Christen L. Ingram (Tim German) of Cobbs Creek, VA, Alexandra E. C. Kunzig of Washington, DC and Lesley R. Hunley of Mathews, VA who are all very fortunate to have had a wonderful and talented mother and grandmother. A private burial will be held at Arlington National Cemetery.

MS Genevieve Chis has always treated me with the utmost of respect as I treated her as her caregiver for less than a year. I loved her smile she will be truly missed. Her love for cats Fatty Patty and Hendrix.
