He was born and raised east of Sidney on the family farm in Prairie Township along with his twin brother, Gale. Dale and his brother attended the Riverside Country School just south of the family farmstead. They would ride their pony or bicycles about a mile and a half down the road (known as Greedysville Road) to and from school each day. After graduating from the eighth grade at Riverside Country School, Dale continued his schooling at the Sidney High School in Sidney, where he graduated with the class of 1952 and was an avid athlete. After selling the family farm years later, Dale worked for the Sidney Community Schools as the Director of Building, Grounds and Transportation. Dale enjoyed sports of all kinds.
