David J. Maher 1960 - 2020 David James Maher passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, October 13, 2020 at his home in Farragut, Iowa at the age of 60 years, 1 month, 20 days. David was born on August 23, 1960 in Shenandoah, Iowa, the son of Francis L. and Wilma Rose (Coy) Maher. He was born 7 weeks premature and weighed 4 pounds, 1 ounce. He attended Iowa School for the Deaf and graduated as salutatorian of the Class of 1978. He was senior class president. David participated in football, wrestling and track while in junior high and high school. He went on to attend and graduate from the National Technical Institute for the Deaf in Rochester, New York. On July 24, 1982, David was united in marriage to Marsha Boyd. Five children were born into this union, James David, Christopher Todd, Maria Rose, Paula Sue and Kayla Ann. They later divorced. For 17 years, David worked as a mail operator for the United States Post Office in Indianapolis, Indiana . He moved back to Iowa the summer of 2002. David worked as a cook at the Admiral Inn café in Farragut from 2003 until 2015 when health reasons caused him to give up the job. David had resided at Admiral Manor in Farragut for 16 years. Some of David's favorite memories were the summers he spent during his elementary years in the Duluth, Minnesota area with his brother Roger and his wife Betty Jo. He was fortunate to join them on summer trips, visiting Niagara Falls, the Cowboy Hall of Fame, the Biltmore Estate and other attractions along with fishing Lake Superior and other summer fun. Another highlight was when David traveled to Germany the summer of 2009 to visit his daughter Maria and her husband John. A trip to the Notre Dame area was also special for him. David's family, the deaf community, friends, his faith and his Irish heritage were all important to him. Preceding David in death were his son Christopher; his parents; five brothers, Mick, Roger, Bob, Jerry and Matt; two sisters, Mary Beth and Denise; and nephew, Brent Maher. Left to cherish his memory are his four children, James David (Nichole), Maria (John) Pierce, Paula (Richard) Butterfield III and Kayla (Josh) Spaid; his 10 grandchildren, Blake Maher, John Pierce, Jr. (JJ), Richard Butterfield IV, Aryana Maher, Ella Spaid, Lily Maher, Jamie Maher, Jake Maher, Savannah Pierce and Christopher Butterfield (CJ); five brothers and sisters, Pat Connelly, William Maher (Celeste Nelson), Duane (Mary) Maher, Doug (Cindi) Maher, and Sandra (Darwin) Bugg; other relatives; and many friends. A Celebration of Life Memorial Mass for David was held on Saturday, November 7, 2020 at 10:30 am at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Imogene. Celebrant was Rev. Lazarus Kirigia. Suzy Pauley served as sign language interpreter. Organist was Charla Schmid and Cantor was Susie McDonald. Special music was "Shepherd Me, Oh God", "On Eagles Wings", "Amazing Grace", "May The Angels Lead You Into Paradise" and "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling". Honorary bearers were David's Grandchildren, his Nieces and Nephews and his Deaf Community. Lector was Marty Maher. Sam Martin was altar assistant. Place of rest was in the Mount Calvary Cemetery at Imogene. Memorials in David's name are being directed to St. Patrick Catholic Church - Imogene or Iowa School for the Deaf Alumni Association.
