Michael Cushing Obituary

CUSHING, Michael Joseph, age 78, of Tucson, passed on Friday, January 1, 2010 at his home. Born November 8, 1931 in Chicago, IL to Michael Joseph III and Katherine Cushing, he was the younger brother of James Cushing. He served in the Navy during the Korean Conflict immediately after high school and returned from the service to begin his lifelong trade as a journeyman plumber. Shortly thereafter, he married and raised three children. He volunteered as a Firefighter in the 1970's for the City of Palos Heights, IL. Mike was an avid sports fan, following teams such as the Chicago Bears, Notre Dame, and the Arizona Wildcats. He was a Spring Training Season Ticket Holder for his beloved Chicago White Sox, who delighted him with a World Series win in 2005. His hobbies were helping friends in need, and is remembered by all as "one of the truly good people, we were fortunate to have met during our lifetime". He is survived by his wife of 56+ years, Jean; children, David (Sally), Diane (John), Michael Joseph V (Cathy); grandchildren, Brittany, Brendan, Jason, Adam, Caitlin, Kevin, Sarah, Madeline, and Michael. He was predeceased by his father, mother and brother. Services are being held Friday, January 8, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Thomas the Apostle Church. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to TMC Hospice Services in memory of Mike.

Dear Jean and family, I'm very sorry for your loss. I got to know Mike over the last 13 years as a wonderfully helpful plumber in retirement, always so cheerful and nice to be around. He will be greatly missed.

Dear Jean and family.

It is with great sorrow we are writing this breif note. The passing of Mike came as a shock. Though it has been too many years since we have seen you, you both will never be forgotten. Many good times we shared together while doing the FD Rag sheet every month. Also going out for our FD dances and good times after. Everyone on the FD "liked Mike." There are only a few like him. Always a smile and always coming up with a joke, or two. Hardly a bad word came from Mike, I wonder if he knew any. We are sorry about Mikes' passing and will have you in our prayers. If there is anything we can do give us a call. With Love, Don and Mickey

Dear Jean, Davey/Sally, Dianne/John, Michael/Cathy and all the family.

Sending our sincere condolences on the passing Uncle Mike. Truly one of life’s great guys. This past week I have been flooded with so many fond and fun memories it has been amazing! And through it all the one single thread was his true devotion and love for his family.

Who else paints a hockey rink in the basement? Understands that slap shots are meant to go thru doors. Always made you feel welcome from the moment he said hell-o. And could talk sports like a gentle man – for that is what he was.

He and my Dad were great brothers. Although they had several different interests and hobbies, they shared a common bond of brotherhood, storytelling and love of life and family that was just wonderful to watch and learn from.

Not sure which story Gramp is on right now, but you know that there are smiles all around the table.

Finally I want to add how grateful I was for chatting with him just a few weeks ago. His love and gratitude for his family shone through and his compassion and understanding for others was, and is, truly inspiring.
Our thoughts & prayers are with all of you.

Dear Aunt Jean, Dave, Diane, and Michael,
I'm very sorry for your loss. I always enjoyed the times I got to spend with Uncle Mike. He was such a neat guy with a great sense of humor. It was especially fun to spend time with him the last time he was in town. I can only imagine how happy my dad is to have his good buddy in heaven. I treasure my picture of the 5 "Michael Cushing." You will continue to be in my prayers.
Take care,
Mike, Nicole, and Michael III Cushing
